Question about Estate TGDS840JQ Gas Dryer

Estate dryer by whirlpool

When the dryer is turned on the flame ignites and stays on for approximately 5 minutes, after the 5 minutes the flame turns off and doesn't turn back on so it only blows cold air, which in turn the clothes don't dry even after 140 minutes of the dryer running. I have cleaned the duct and the inside of the dryer thoroughly so there isn't anything blocking the air flow. I'm assuming that it is one of the thermostats but I'm not sure.

thanks for your help. After a lot of research and your input it was determined that the solenoids/coils were bad. both were replaced and the dryer works great now. Thanks again

We also have an Estate Dryer (TGDX640PQ0) with similar problem. The local repair shop suggested that I pop off the "peep hole" cover and watch for the ignitor to glow. It didn't. So, I pulled it. When hooked to 120 VAC, it glows right away! Guess that's not what's broken.

How can I test the coils? Or, should I simply replace them?

BTW: We have six children and use the heck out of our dryer!

SAME PROBLEM here ..we have 5 kids and this dryer is very well used. It turns on and runs for about 10 minutes then shuts down with the clothes lukewarm. It is so frustrating. We replaced the thermostat last year ..I guess we'll try the coils ..

I have the same exact model dryer and it is doing the same thing, in addition the timer does not move at all in the auto position, the dryer will run indefinitely unless you shut it down manually, heating is also sporadic.. would it be the thermostat or the coils we use our dryer daily also.. Thanks

the coils/solenoids can be tested but its time consuming. For both parts it was under $20.00 and it was easy to remove and replace them.

Went through the electrical system with a local repair shop (on the phone). They were very willing to think this problem through with me.

Turns out that there was a fuse blown on the back of the machine. I removed each fuse and tested them with a meter. (You cannot test fuses that are connected into a circuit.) The blown fuse was only a few dollars and I got it from the guys that helped me out.

Check your fuses! If they are blown; then they are doing exactly what they are designed for . . . preventing an overload and possibly a fire.

All is well with our dryer, now!

Sounds like weak selonid on gas valve

There is a way to test the coils/solenoids, but it's time consuming. To but both parts cost twenty dollars or less if you buy the combination pack. They were easy to replace and I haven't had a problem since.

Check the thermocouple it is going bad or already has and that is why the gas valve is not staying open.

Can not get pilot to light on estate by whirlpool gas dryer

The pilot will only turn on for a couple of seconds while the gas comes out to create the flame for the heat to do its job. The pilot is a ceramic fuse that will not stay on at all times. It will click as a sign that is activating (you should see a red glowing light) and ready for the gas/ propane to come out ( the flame will stay on approx. two to five minutes), then it will turn off . Repeating itself many times throughout the cycle. It this is not happening you might need to replace the fuse. Good luck

If you are having problems with your gas dryer not heating the most common problem is that the ignitor goes bad. Even though it glows sometimes it is still not working properly.

if you dryer is gas check out this gas no heat tip....

If you have an electric dryer, you can have many different things that can go wrong causing the dryer not to heat.

check out this electric no heat tip...

Gas dryer heat is intermediate

does the igniter glow white or orange? if it is orange you need to replace it. has to be white hot to ignite. if the igniter is white it could be the coils not opening the gas valve all the time - an intermittent problem.

Dryer turns on and fires but it takes forever .exhaust is not plugged.sometimes igniter glows but flame doesnt light Estate by Whirlpool

If the ignitor does not glow then it or the thermostat is bad. If the ignitor is glowing but the gas does not light then the flame sensor may have to be replaced. If the gas ignites but does not stay on either the flame sensor or the coils are at fault.

Dryer flame on magtag wont stay lit. Pilot flares up but no flame

Thermocouple is probably bad. The pilot burns and heats a sensor which tells the CPU that the Flame can start, and the thermocouple heating up changes voltage with increase temperature and tells the CPU that the Flame is burning OK. If it is defective, there is no voltage change and the CPU assumes that the Flame didn't start for some reason, (Gas only!) and turns if off for safety. Over and over xx times.
