Maxtor One Touch External HDD not being recognized by PC

Hello, I have an Acer LapTop Pc running Windows XP SP2 and a Maxtor One Touch 120GB External HDD (DiamondMax Plus 9 ATA/ 133)

I havent used this Hard Drive in a few years and when I did it was set up on prior Desktop Systems. I attempted to set it up on my lap top yesterday and downloaded all of the software (6.0 which now has an update 1.1) I installed all, including Maxtor Software as well (of course) and when I plug the USB into the Acer LapTop, NOTHING happens, the Laptop is not recognizing the HDD, so initially assumed it was a faulty USB drive, but then when I opened the Maxtor Software on my Dektop it would have only 1 button available and that was the "Setup" Button, when I pushed it NOTHING happened, and in the Main Screen of the Maxtor set up Window, its asks you to select your drive to back up, etc. and it gave me no options, just blank. Which obviously now leads me to assume that the software is not communicating with my PC.

When I turn on the Power button of the HDD, the Blue light turns on so its getting Power, but when I plug in the USB my PC isnt even aware of new hardware being present.

My Maxtor Software is not communicating with my Laptop, no options available in display menu referencing my C: Drive or files, folders, etc.

Both Devices Manager and Disk Management do not reflect the External HDD is even present or available, totally un-acknowledged.

Please Help, thank you very much ahead of time

Can't read HD-- I/O error

"Joecolvette" has probably got it right, I've seen this before. The HDD enclosure circuit board has a fault. Can be resolved by replacing the enclosure. Plenty on ebay, just ensure you buy one with the correct HDD interface (Sata or IDE).

Alternatively, if you have a tower with a spare port, you could take the HDD out of the caddy, install it in the tower as a "Slave" (check jumper settings) ensuring the system drive is set to "Master". Then you can check whether the HDD itself is at fault.

My computer says it does not recognize the external hard drive after i have used it for several months. If i use it on another computer, will it recognize it or should i download something first?

Install the hdd in another PC, If run well, think your OS has corrupted.
Then you should re install the OS again.Or you can restore the system

If the HDD is not run run in that another pc ,think external hard drive, has damaged and should change.

Hope it will help you.

External HDD no longer recognized by new win7 PC

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked. I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

If plugged in the first time, the external drive needs to be initialized from your computer. Here are the steps.

1. Plug in your external drive to your computer's usb port.
2. Right click your My Computer and choose Manage.
3. Click on the Disk Management from the left. The list of available drives will show on the right.
4. Right click on your External drive and select create partition (primary partition).
5. After that you now you need to format the hard drive. Choose quick format.
6. Right click again on the partition you've just created, now select "Format" and select NTFS.
7. Click Ok and follow the wizard as it will guide you until it is finished.

Hope this helps.

My pc dose not come up my maxtor basics external desktop hard drive

What OS are you using? Windows 98SE does not always recognize exterrnal hard drives. Try the external HD on a computer running Windows XP and see if that works. If it works on WinXP and not Win98SE or possibly WinME the External HD is good.
