Question about AEG Washing Machines

1 Answer

Drum problem? Hi After decades of faultless service, my OKO Lavamat 538 now can't cope with the start point of its anti-clockwise drum revolution, it has a kind of starting fit and bangs about. This is only during the wash cycles, and almost regardless of load size. Clockwise motion is fine. I paid the call out fee to a repair guy, but he had no idea. Is this fixable do you think, or should I just accept its days are over?

Hi, it's when the machine attempts to start up an anti-clockwise revolution only. The clockwise motion of the drum is fine. Spin is also fine.

Thank you for responding! Do you think it would still be the drum bearings if the spin function was working perfectly (as is the case)?

Thanks very much for this suggestion. Do you think it would still be the bearings if the spin function was working perfectly (which it is)?

  • oysterman Jun 17, 2014

It can be the bearings ' line up' in one direction if they are beginning to fail so if the drum tries to go in the opposite direction it has to 'line up' the other way. Try rotating the drum when the machine is empty by hand. If the bearings are failing you will be able to feel and hear a grinding noise as though there is sand in them. If they are silent and smooth in both directions then it is not your drum bearings. You could then be looking at the drive belt slipping from the motor, or the motor bearings running out or even just worn motor brushes.

Sincere thanks for all this. Turning the drum manually is smooth in both directions, but a faint clicking/ticking sound, not grinding. Your three suggestions are really helpful. It would be amazing if we got this thing back on its feet, but if not, at least we've had a good shot at it. With warm wishes

That's good if the drum bearings had gone it would be cheaper to buy a new machine.

SOURCE: washer make a clicking noise

Zoobs, you could have something stuck under the agitator. The agitator will pull straight off. Grip it on each side and pull up hard, but don't hit yourself in the face. If that don't work, try slipping a belt under it and pull. Check for something caught under it. Another possibility could be the nylon suspension rod socket supports in the back. They will make a noise during agitation if they are dry. Put a little 3 in 1 oil to quite them down. Take the front panel off and check the pulley and belt, see if anything is out of whack. I also often find the motor support hitting the bottom panel during agitation making noise. Take the front panel off and observe during agitation. See if the support is striking the bottom. If so, just bend the bottom panel down. Catriver..post back.

SOURCE: Loud Knocking

this is a collapsed drum bearing, one of the most costly of the repairs apart from the timer and motor, not normally a job for the diy man unless has an engineering background, sorry, the cost of repair depends on the age and replacement cost of a machine, a bit like a car, would you buy an engine for a 20 year old car, if you have a machine thats expensive then the repair could be worth it? stop running it you will cause more damage both to the clothes and the machine sorry (ps i am a retired appliance engineer of 20 years service)

Where is the filter for die AEG lavamat 538 washing machine and how do you clean it?

Hello,

The only filter/screen I am familiar with is the one in the hoses the supply hot and cold water to your machine. They should be checked once in a while but I have never found much in them.

However, the manual for your machine is located here:

Best wishes,

"After decades of faultless service.." The word decades should provide a clue. Appliances don't last forever.

My 12 year old AEG OKO LAVAMAT is making a grinding sound when it fills. It's fine at all other times. I've tried cleaning out the filter, and running it empty.

This is usually caused by the recycling pump running empty whilst the washing is still soaking up the initial fill water. as the water begins to soak the clothes it then starts to pass through the drum into the pump and the whole thing quietens down. running empty will not work. to test this theory try opening the drawer very slightly and filling it manually with a hose before starting the machine, (ONLY TO THE NORMAL LEVEL) and see if the noise is still as bad.

What means error code "C9" ? AEG Lavamat 76669

Hi,

C9 Indicates Motor Fault. It seems that the Carbon Brushes have Worn out.

Replace it and more likely it would Fix the Problem.Once you replace that, you need to put the machine into Service Mode to Reset the Error.

Steps for Reset the Error Code

1. Press and Hold the Prewash and Soaking Buttons Together.
2. Whilst Holding them, Turn the Dial from Off one Click Anti Clockwise

Note - If problem persists, Check the motor plug for broken wires and check the state of the carbon brushes.

Let me know, if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

About mid cycle, a significant amount of water leaks out of the bottom. No error message comes up and the machine continues functioning. Machine is AEG oko lavamat 72640

Could the machine be overfilling due to a faulty pressure switch (controls the amount of water in the drum). Splits in the door seal or broken pipes?

AEG OKO LAVAMAT

- Turn Off - Press down Prewash and Soaking together. Keep them held down. - Slowly turn the knob clockwise to Gentle Spin - This should reset the machine
If you get a beep instead of a reset, there is a problem. - Keep the two buttons held down. - Slowly turn the know anti-clockwise to Wool 40 degrees - It should now give you an Error Code. - Google for the manual, which will tell you what the error code means
