Interface CE-ATA, PATA, ZIF are the "only" interfaces designed to
work with this Apple product. So you need; a USB cable that has
1 of these interfaces (opposite end of cable) OR you might have to
search for an adapter/converter module that can "translate" the info
to your machine. Good Luck.

How to retrieve data from a broken laptop.

Most people today with careers on the go have a laptop. With this mobility comes great sacrifice and that's because of the risk of hard disk failure thorough dropping or mishandling. When this happens the only thing on their minds is if they'll ever see their data again. This wouldn't be such a crisis if they recently made a backup but then again how many do. So if your laptop has broken or stopped working then here is what you can do to retrieve the data yourself.

We're going to assume that the hard drive survived and is still functional.

First of all you're going to need to dismantle the laptop to remove the hard drive. As there are so many different types of laptops out there I can't give you a universal way to dismantle it, if you want the dismantling instructions just type How to dismantle Your laptops model name here laptop for example into Google or Yahoo!

We want to be able to access the data on the hard drive so you'll need a IDE to USB cable (for older drives) or a SATA to USB cable (for newer drives). This all depends of which connector your laptop's drive has. You'll need a 12 volt source for the hard disk which can be obtained from a molex power cable in the PC.

Plug the power from your power supply to the required power connector on the drive (normally a molex connector or newer thin power connecor on more recent power supplies that use SATA technology) and then plug the data cable USB into one of your free USB ports and boot up the PC.

Look around in my computer and you should see the laptop hard disk listed, it should be seen as an external hard disk just like a flash drive when you plug it in.

Copy over all the files and information that you want recovered to the desktop. Depending on the situation, you may want to format the hard disk, re-install the OS, and then re-use the hard disk.

When you purchase a new laptop you can then copy the recovered data onto it and there you have it just like before. Remember to make regular back-ups of important files in the future as the hard drive may not always be working if the laptop fails.

This is what a IDE drive looks like, notice the many pins in the IDE connection.

This is what a SATA drive looks like notice the large L shaped data connection and the smaller L shaped power connection.

My hard drive is suddenly undetectable by mac. when i plugged it in windows, it said "the drive is not formatted" how do i retrieve my files?

Hi,

The Mac and the windows file system are different. So if you will connect a Mac file system formatted hard drive to a windows system then it may occur. To retrieve your data from your MAC hard drive you have to connect the drive to a Mac system.

Check the cables of the hard drive or replace them. You can try to connect with another port of the mother board. If the Bios don't detect your hard drive then check the bios settings. If the bios detects your hard drive but you can't access it then try to repair the OS to retrieve your data.

My Iomega eGo Portable Hard drive 500 GB main light is not showing when i plug it in through the usb drive, i think this connection may be damaged. Is a way to solve it to buy dc5v to usb cable and plug it...

Have you tried connecting it with the Firewire cable that came with it? (your pc may not have the correct port) or connecting it with a different usb cable?
Has the drive been dropped? it has a protection system which shuts the drive down when it is dropped. you may need to put the HDD into a different caddy or plug it directly into a desktop pc's motherboard to retrieve you data.
I hope this helps.

Well take the back cover off the laptop itself and retrieve the hard drive- then simply connect that to another computer and take files from there on to a external hard drive :)

I want to retrieve data from an old 50-pin hd from my old mac. Anybody got a solution?

There are two ways of retrieving data from a SCSI hard drive.
1. Connect the SCSI hard drive to a different SCSI connector on the same data cable, make sure this hard drive has a different SCSI ID from the first hard drive or other SCSI devices in your system. When you boot up your MAC you should see the second SCSI hard drive, You can then copy off your data or remove the redundant files and keep the old hard drive in your system as a 2nd hard drive.
2. Connect the old SCSI hard drive to a SCSI USB hard drive adapter. Then connect it to the USB port on the MAC and you should see this as an external hard drive.

SATA 3.5" 2.5" IDE 3 IN 1 TO USB 2.0 CABLE ADAPTOR KIT

1 external connection kit
1 internal connection kit

The internal connect kit consists of 1 red USB connector cable
and 1 internal white male molex connector to SATA female power connector
( 1 yellow wire , 2 black wires , 1 red wire )

the external connect kit
consists of a 3 pin power adaptor (with a tiny plug to save space) feeding a power supply which powers either IDE thru a Molex connector or SATA through a supplied adaptor. Supplied also are data connectors to link the IDE or SATA hard drive with a USB port. Use this adaptor set to retrieve data from a hard drive when it is not mounted in a computer.
