Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven
Several possible causes - failure of the magnetron or high voltage rectifier or a shorted high voltage capacitor. Also, the transformer may not be receiving 120 v (on U. S. units) from whatever controls it. Checking to see if 120 v is present would be the first step. If it's there, the high voltage diode should be checked for continuity to make sure it conducts in only one direction. Then, the high voltage capacitor should be checked to make sure it is not shorted. If everything's o.k., the magnetron filament should be checked for continuity. Also, check for a short between the cathode and the case. There's also the possibility that one of the door switches has failed, or is not being activated. Keep in mind that these ovens run on 4000 volts, or more, and you can easily be electrocuted if you don't understand what you're doing. Some can maintain the 4000 volt charge on the high voltage capacitor indefinitely.

There is a mini-manual inside the oven which can aid in troubleshooting.
If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info (as well as a text file which helps in diagnosing and repairing door switch problems) at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

Microwave will not operate (cook). F7 error code appears on the display.
Electrical circuit interruption between L1 and Neutral in the microwave inverter circuit.
1. Check door, hinge and cavity front alignment and adjust as needed.
2. Check the operation of all interlock switches.
3. Check over temperature protector for the magnetron.
4. Check all Cavity Thermostats for closed circuit.
5. Unplug the oven for at least 40 seconds. If this solves the problem
A. Check the Cooling Fan for proper operation or blockage
B. Check the resistance of the magnetron thermostat. It should be 0 Ohms, replace if necessary.
6. Check that the control cable to the 1100 watt inverter is properly connected to plug P2 on the display PCB
& Adjust or Reconnect
7. If interlock switches operate correctly, replace 1100W inverter.
8. If problem persists, replace control assembly.
NOTES ON INVERTERS
This model uses an inverter to produce high voltage instead of a convential transformer system.
While an inverter (switched-mode power supply) is more efficient from a power consumption standpoint, it is more complex, thus more statistically prone to fail. These should only be examined and worked on by someone who has the necessary technical qualifications. Seriously.
Often the machine-soldered connections in a microwave inverter are too weak, so they eventually fail, especially if heat is high in the area. They sometimes fail catastrophically. When not catastrophically damaged, you may hear clicking or squealing and may smell an electrical odor, which is sometimes obscured by the cooling fan.
Some manufacturers do not encourage or assist technicians to repair microwave inverters. Most offer the inverter as a whole assembly. But sometimes that is actually cheaper than the time and labor required to fix the old one.
If a technician is willing and able to troubleshoot and repair the inverter to component level, it will may be expensive, but may be worth it, especially if he or she will resolder and reinforce connections as needed as part of a thorough repair. That could easily make your inverter beter than a new one!
You might be able to get some verbal estimates if you call Panasonic-authorized repair shops and ask then specifically about inverter repair and inverter replacement costs for your model number.
