Hi - Is this definitely a Mac? Usually being stuck in DOS only happens with non-Macs.

If a mac, could you tell me what you're seeing on screen while in "DOS mode". for example, screen color, text color, any messages or prompts?

Thank you - I'll be on the lookout for your reply

P.S. On a Mac, if you used Boot Camp to install Windows, and if you have started your Mac from the Windows partition, then yes, you could be stuck starting up from that partition. But I need to make sure, because your Mac could also be starting in something like single-user mode, taking you into the UNIX shell, which looks to some people like DOS. So I want to be sure what is actually happening.

My computer trys to turn on but just sits there on and off on and off

Does it show a blue screen? If so you want to disable the automatic restart so you can read the error message.
To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc ora operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot fromit. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with whiteletters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice thepercentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run tocompletion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows.Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair whenthe options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recoveryconsole and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.

Make sure that your computed is on the same workgroup or domain as the other computers are.

You can check that by going into the control panel. Press system. Press the computer name tab. Change the domain name or workgroup accordingly.
