The screws are for high and low. Start by tighting the screws . Then unscrew both about 1-1/4 turns. Work on one at a time. Get the high adjustment dialed in first, then work on the low or idle.

Can't start chainsaw

Walter:

gently run the fuel and air mixture screws on the carburetor all the way closed (clockwise).then turn them out one and a quarter turns each. That setting should allow the saw to start if you are getting fuel to the carburetor. Once the saw starts, make fine adjustments to the fuel/air mixture screws until the saw runs to your satisfaction.

42cc 18 inch craftsman chainsaw model 358-351910-18. Saw runs great at idle or while not cutting wood, when starting to cut wood just after the entire bar gets into the wood engine bogs down and chain...

Generally this is a fuel / air ratio problem. Usually it can be solved by a carb adjustment. On the carb there are usually two screws, one marked low or L , the other marked high or H. Low is your adjustment for idle mixture, high is for mixture at full throttle. The saw should Always be adjusted to run well during the cut. Make adjustments a little at a time, then try The saw. Continue small adjustments untill the saw is performing well at full throttle while Cutting.

How do you set the carburator back to factory specs. mine wont keep running

Basic settings can vary from model to model, a good starting point for most carbs is screw both H and L screw right in ,then back the H screw out 1 turn and the L screw 1 and1/4 turns, the machine should run well enough to fine adjust from there, they are both fuel screws, so the more you unscrew them the richer the saw becomes, always remember if there in another under lying problem adjusting the carb screws will not always help, before any adjustment clean or replace the fuel filter in the fuel tank.

My chain saw will not start. I gave it to a guy who messed up the carb adjustments. Need to know the initial carb setting.

Turn both jet screws CW to stops (lightly), then back each out CCW 1-1/2 turns. This is a basic setting and should allow the engine to start and run. Start the engine and allow to warm up, then pull the throttle full on. Turn the H needle CW until the engine starts to speed up, but still 4-strokes. Correct adjustment is when the engine 4-strokes running free, but immediately 2-strokes when cutting. Release the throttle and adjust L needle so that the engine idles fairly well, but allows the engine to 'follow the throttle'. Adjust idle speed screw so that the chain stops turning, but the engine continues to run. Hope this helps!

Need carb setting wont idle runs in spurts

There is usually a sticker with a craftsman Model Number on it, often "358.Something". That number can be used to find an IPL and if you are lucky an OM here: Sears PartsDirect http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action Start at 1.5 CCW from lightly seated then tune for performance like this:
Carburetor Adjustment by Madsens.com
http://www.madsens1.com/saw%20carb%20tune.htm
CW is leaner; to lean will destroy the saw. If over tightened closed (CW) the adjustment screw faces are easily marred; marred adjustments are difficult to impossible to set properly.
Clean the air filter; adjusting with a dirty filter can cause a run lean condition once cleaned and the saw run.

There are 2 wav (sound - idle & full – may not be highlighted) files that I find most helpful, I think you will too. HTH
