Washing Machine has burnt rubber smell

My top-load washing machine produces a burnt rubber smell. I believe the problem has been there for some time, but I thought it was something else. It has progressively gotten worse over the last three months. I believe our machine is over 20 yrs old.

The machine still performs well otherwise; it cleans and spins normally. I had a problem a few months ago with oil stains on my clothes coming out of the washer, but that hasn't been an issue for awhile.

I need to know what possible root causes could produce the smell and how to verify them. My husband and I are pretty handy, but we haven't tackled a washing machine before.

Your problem is probably the coupling that ataches the motor to the transmission , take the skirt of the washer off , take the motor off and you going to see the rubber coupling if is bad just change it , cheap part

Washing machine burnt wires?

It could be that the drive belt was slipping and got heated up. Look underneath the machine to see if the belt looks burnt or shredded. There may be small pieces of rubber on the floor under the machine. If the belt is OK then the motor may have overheated (but usually there is an overload switch in it to prevent burning up.)

WASHER STARTS MAKING LOUD NOISES WHEN SPINNING SOUNDS LIKE IT IS OFF BALANCE BUT NOT. ALSO FAINT SMELL OF BURNT RUBBER.

The washing machine will do this if the load is unbalanced. Usually due to either an excessively heavy and/or large load. The burning rubber smell is just the drive belt dealing with the imbalance. Often the washing machine will self-balance itself, but it's a good idea to open the lid and re-distribute the load. Or remove some stuff if it seems too heavy.
