Question about Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra MP3 Player

1 Answer

How can I salvage my tracks when faced with the following menu?

My zen xtra died a while ago displaying a fractured screen image saying "hardware problem", i bought a new battery, which improved things a little, getting it to display the EAX logo, but nothing else. I preseed reset while holding play, and the following menu came up:

1 Clean Up
2 format all
3 reload OS
4 Reboot

Which of these should i try that DOES NOT erase all my tracks? I'm desperately trying to salvage the sings I have on there, many impossible to replace.
Suggestions? Thanks! Kev moore

Zoot: First off, thanks for the advice. I managed to get my Mac to recognize it with the Creative compatible program I have, and have downloaded all the tracks into itunes - success! Next step will be to try selecting 1 and defragging. Currently, when the mains is in, it shows a plug symbol, but at no time since I put the new battery in has it shown the charge symbol, or indeed the battery symbol when the mains is unplugged, in fact, it just goes off when the mains is unplugged. Will a zen xtra charge a new battery via the usb port from a mac?

Well, the 24 hour charge made no impression, so I pressed 1 - Clean up, then 3, Reload OS. I normally use a mac, so transferred to my laptop PC to continue, and the laptop won't recognize the Zen xtra. that is to say, it knows its there, and prompts the driver wizard to go through the motions of looking for the driver update which I downloaded from the creative site, but it never finds it. How can I rectify this? Cheers!

The one definately not to touch is 2: you lose everything. The safest is 4 but doesn't really solve any problem. 3 is probably not a good solution either but maybe to try in last resort before 2. 1 sounds like it will perform a defragmentation which should not result in a loss of info on the disk.
have you tried to connect it to your pc (via usb) and looked in file explorer if it appeared there ? (try once with power off, then with power on). if you manage to connect you can then download your songs to your pc.

Glad to hear you managed to save your tracks. Before you read further could you please give me some thumbs up ? ... done ??? ... Thanks !!!!

Now the bad news .... i think your player is dead, it just shows some last struggeling signs of life but the end is near ...

by what you described your new battery manages to give the player just enough life to perform the usb connection but that's all and only because it tunnels the mains power, not it's own power because it doesn't seem to charge at all (goes out when disconnected from mains).

Last try would be to leave it on the mains for at least 24 hours without touching anything, if it manages to show anything whatsoever on the screen means that it is charging, but i honestly doubt it will.

Your last chance is option 3 (reload OS) and then 2 (format all).

Just let me know if anything worked/did not work.

Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra Display Failure

Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard
