Celestron NexStar alignment problem

Hi,
Can't get the 3 star align to work on the Celestron 102 ST. Just after we bought it aligned it in no time at all, but ever since it keeps coming up with "align fail". I've tried about a hundred times now I think!
Don't understand what I'm doing wrong or different, but it just doesn't work.
Please help!!

Several questions-

1. Are you SURE you are choosing the correct alignment star?

2. Are all the settings correct like-- Location, Time, Date, Daylight savings time.

All settings are correct. Time, date, city etc......it's still failing to align. I've tried following the directions where I'm supposed to align three of the brightest stars on opposite sides of the sky, as we'll as the easy way of just picking any three stars......still fails every time!

There's nothing in the directions that suggest to pick a specific star to begin alignment. I've watched every video....most of them say just align any three stars. The manual directions say to select three of the brightest stars. After aligning the first one, pick the second on the opposite side of the sky and repeat the process for the third.

I dont understand how to start and use my nexstar 4 SE computerized telescope

Basically, enter Time, Date, and Site-- level the tripod and do a 2 or 3 star alignment.

All of the manuals are on the Celestron web site here--

How do i align the scope? I have the C8 NGT scope and am new to this whole set up. Any help please.

Read the manual which is available on the Nexstar web site here:

http://www.nexstarsite.com/

Generally you will enter Time, Date, and Site, and Standard Time, and then setup POLAR ALIGNED on Polaris and execute a 2 or 3 star alignment.

I have the Nexstar 8. It will not auto align or manual....

First do a RESET on the hand controller and make sure TIME, DATE, and SITE, are correct.

If this does not work then RE-load the firmware in the hand controller. If that fails contact Celestron customer service.

You need to synchronize the telescope with stellarium. Center the telescope on a known star, then select the same star on the laptiop and 'synch' with it.

You must set TIME, DATE, and SITE-- probably does not know your actual location. Read the manual and perform all of the setup procedures.

Some of these have a "starting position" again read the manual and make sure you are in the "home" position before you start the alignment. Read my TIP on my profile page about GOTO telescopes, and join the NEXSTAR forum on www.cloudynights.com

Start Align with NexStar 4SE

Did you enter the correct TIME, DATE, and LOCATION? and yes you may have aligned on to the wrong stars -- they need to be "near" the center.

2-star alignment

I also have an 8i, but decided not to upgrade the controls yet. I've had my scope for about four years. I have experienced the same problem and am not sure what what causes it. Some nights, the scope tracks alignment all night, other times it does not. When the later occurs, the only thing that helps is to repeat the alignment picking new targets. One night, I had to repeat alignment 3-4 times. Also, I highly recommend a book by Michael Swanson, "The Nexstar User's Guide". It's an easy read, very specific and keeps the novice in mind. It should be included with every Nexstar sold. Go online to: http://www.Nexstarsite.com. Hope this helps. John

GPS not working

Nope! Sounds normal. The GPS is used as the surface point and time refrence, but it still needs the star fixes to orient the axis. 2 star alignment is generally for Alt-Az mounting, while you can use 1 star for rapid setup on a permanent equatorial mount.

Be sure that the Azimuth Axis is Lock, you migth want to try and move the telescope in the Azimuth to make sure it is it is locked. Be carful not to force it. I have seen on some post where the locking part of the Azimuth somtimes breaks. and the Azimuth Axis will just spin freely Locked down or not.
