VGA Splitter frying video cards?

I work in the IT department for a major university and we recently had a problem with an Extron P/2 DA2 Plus that fried two different computers' video cards. This happened when the system was off, but both the computer and the splitter were plugged in. The VGA cable was removed then plugged in again (in order to move the tower), but after, would only show a black screen. This happened again when we physically replaced the system with another, different computer (but same monitor and splitter).

I'm not sure if this is a new or common problem, but we have since stopped using the splitter, and have had to replace a lot of hardware because of it. If this has happened to anyone else, or if someone has found a solution, it would be very much appreciated.

BOB- There may have been a cable or video card issue that was possibly overdriving power to the P2Da2. I work in the AV industry, and have never had a problem like that. I know this was 4 years ago when you wrote it, I am interested to know what has happened since then. Because the product is an everyday unit for us. Thanks.

Sometimes it is difficult to answer a question without asking very basic questions. Using a DVI and a VGA ports will allow you to have screens with different things showing on them. If you use a splitter, the two monitors connected to the splitter will show the same thing on both screens. Is this what you want? I use a splitter at church to have Powerpoint on the main computer monitor, the program then shows on the screen on the wall and the TV monitor, as well as the second monitor at the computer. My splitter occasionally acts up, and I found that unplugging it and plugging it back in makes it work for another couple months. But a splitter for only two monitors is very cheap, no switch box involved.

Using the splitter i can not get windows 7 to recognize the other monitor and enable multiple monitors

Hello there,
As you've said you're using a display splitter, the result will be identical screen on both monitors. splitters main function is to split VGA signals into N of outputs. where N=number of outputs. no matter how many monitors you attach to your splitter, the windows only recognize monitors attached directly to your video card. Windows requires a video card that has two or more output VGA or DVI outputs to get second extended monitor or display link device.
If you're video card has two outputs follow the instruction below.
1. plug the VGA or DVI other cable on the unused port. 2. power on the second monitor. 3. right click on the desktop, click screen resolution.

4. click the display in gray, Multiple Displays: it depends on the user.

5. I selected extended display. 6. apply and ok.

This spreads your desktop over both monitors and lets you drag items between the two screens. This is how most people use two monitors, and it's the default setting for desktop computers. you can use your mouse to grab the title bar (the top portion) of a window and drag it to your new display.

Hopefully this information is helpful. Thank you for using FixYa..

I have bought a vga splitter to split one vga port in to 2. the other monitor isn't being registerd by th comuter when i use the splitter

The computer will only see either one monitor or the splitter itself as the monitor, it won't recognize them separately or be able to put different data onto each (if indeed it is a true "splitter")
It's like the output from a satellite receiver. Just because you put a cable splitter on it so that you can have 2 TV's hooked up, both will be on whatever single output is coming out of the receiver, it doesn't let you watch 2 different shows, one on each screen. You'd need another receiver for that.
Likewise, if you want to see 2 monitors on the computer, there has to be 2 separate video outputs (some cards provide more than 1 output, but since you got a splitter, I am assuming this isn't the case for you).

I have two moniters [ACER]connectedby a VGA SPLITTER HOW DO IGET TWO DIFFERENT PROGRAMS ON SEPERATE SCREENS

if your VGA splitter is a y-shaped cable with one input at one end that plugs into a single normal vga output on your graphics card, you can't do it this way. You need a graphics card with two seperate outputs. VGA splitters can only duplicate one same output across two monitors.

If you don't have a card in there that does this, probably because you're using an old PC with internal graphics, you will need to upgrade by buying a new card. Cards with 2 outputs are pretty cheap these days though, just make sure you get the right one for your motherboard.

The extron is only flashing lights but not working. what could the problem be?

Flashing lights mean power failure, you have to send the unit to Extron for repair. Extron has 3 years warranty, they can check if the unit can be repaired at no cost.

Try another input on switcher. Did you have any other equipment connected between switcher and the projector, if yes, bypass it. Call Extron Support they are very helpful and they provide free support.

Need to connect 3 monitors. Want to use either a Nvidia 290 or ATI Radeon 9250 plus the VGA port. Installing the dual-video card disables the VGA port, cannot get it back. Help!!!

Use your AGP dual-video card for two and using a PCI VGA card for the third. It is best if the same manufacturer video driver is used for both cards, as two different ones could be problematic.
