DSL Light on 2-Wire2701 HG keeps on Flashing Red...Tried Resetting & Power Cycling the Modem...Still Nothing...Any Suggestions Plz

  • eira2000 Nov 10, 2007

Bought the 2 wire 2700HG-B from Digi Dave, said it was Vista compatible have connected it but thre was already a password set for it, had to phone America to get new password. On doing this thought it would be ok. but I can not get the DSL light to remain green it shows no DSL connection. Have noticed that the router address is 192.168.1.254 but the DHCP range is 192.168.1.64 - 192.168.1.253, does this mean my router is outside the range. Also it has a keycode preset will this affect anything? Any help would be appreciated as I was up until 1 this morning trying to sort it.

Hi. I will not repeat the check the phone line and resetting comments as it's now redundant.

I always have a spare modem as a line tester.

I've seen several 2700HG-B 2wire modem/routers burn out and every single time it's the DSL signal or modem portion that is burnt out. Even if you have two or three phone line surge protectors these 2700s are prone to shorting out unless you have a direct signal splitter DSL setup.

Here are a few things you can try to confirm if the 2700 is no longer functional on the DSL signal light problem.

#1: Turn on (plug in) your 2700 without the phone line plugged in and wait. If the DSL starts flashing red then there is a hardware problem in the modem/router.

#2: Plug the phone line into the 2700 while the dsl light is flashing red. It might take about 3 seconds however it should start to flash green and let it flash for about (usually) three minutes. If it turns red then the 2700 is indeed damaged.

#3: If you can enter into your modem using the http://2wire... and check the connection status. The first two status lines should read attempting to connect and no connection.

This looks like there is no DSL signal available to the modem. Please follow the steps given below.

i) Make sure that your telephone has dial tone - you should listen to a tone when you lift your phone

ii) Check the connection to the modem is proper

iii) Disconnect all the cables from the modem and plug them back after 30 seconds.

iv) If other telephone devices such as fax machine, caller ID, burglar alarms are fixed on same line, make sure they are properly connected through filter - If possible, try disconnecting all these devices and check the light status

v) If any of the above steps dont work, please contact your ISP

Thank you

The problem is that the DSL Service is being interupted by either other devices such as Phones, alarm systems, fax machines....anything that connects to phone jack that does not have a filter....or its your Internet Service Provider. Check all jacks in the house....if not sure unplug all jacks and see if the dsl lite turns on.

When i connect the dsl cable to it the dsl light starts flashing green then red

Put tinfoil over your splice connectors and filters as they leak signals that totally confuse your modem. Never leave any bare wires, I tinfoil the entire modem to prevent the neighbors from hacking me. I don't use wireless, only CAT5 ethernet cable.

Tip

Troubleshooting DSL Modems

Ever look at your DSL Modem and wonder what all those lights mean? Why do some flash, while others remain solid? What if your lights are different colors? How do you tell if your DSL Modem is working correctly?<br /> <br /> Each light on your DSL Modem represents a function. The light is an indication of whether that function is working properly. Sometimes the placement and title of each function can vary by modem manufacturer, but they are pretty standard in interpetation. If you look closely your modem, you might find that each function is labeled in small print to help identify them.<br /> <br /> A standard DSL Modem has a light for power, internet, ethernet, link and wireless connection. A healthy DSL Modem will have a steady green light that does not blink or flutter for all features other than internet, ethernet and wireless. A flashing or fluttering light indicates movement and useage. When you are connected to your DSL Modem wireless, the light for this feature will blink indicating a connection and/or active useage. If the internet connection is working properly the color of the light will be green. If the connection is working but experincing a problem the light can turn to yellow or orange. If the connection fails, the light on the DSL Modem can be red or absent depending on the problem causing the trouble. If your service is turned off by the provider, more than likely the light will be "off".<br /> <br /> If your lights turn a different color, are absent or your internet connection fails try power cycling your modem before reporting the trouble to your provider. Power cycling helps the DSL Modem to reset its connection and repair your internet services.<br /> <br /> If you are using a DSL Modem alone to connect to the internet (no additional router) you can power cycle it by first turning off your computer and then unplug the modem itself from the power source at the wall. Wait for 1 to 2 minutes and then plug it back into the power source and wait for the warm up to finish before rebooting the pc.<br /> <br /> The DSL Modem should go through the normal warm up procedures of blinking lights, making them all stable and solid green ect. You will know when its finished warming up when the features are set at solid green (other than eithernet, internet and wireless connection as explained above). When the modem finished the warm up, reboot your computer and check your internet connection.<br /> <br /> Power cycling your DSL Modem can help keep your connection healthy and running at optimal speeds.<br />

I have an at&t 2wire 2701hg-b but i dont have at&t internet i have charter and i am not able to figure out how to get my internet to work with this router please help

att 2 wire is a Adsl Modem (Requires a telephone line jack to get the signals) but charter communication is a cable internet service (not DSL) , Requires a TV cable service for internet .
These two jacks differs and there working differs ..
Means : Att works with the username and password type of authentication but charter requires the MAC address of modem for authentication .
Therefore for a cable internet 2wire 2701hg-b modem cant be used . But yes in case charters has username and password authentication and works with the telephone jack in house then its possible to use the same modem.

What does a red internet light mean and how do I fix it? I recently moved and when I plugged in my router the dsl light is green and the internet light is red. When I look at my laptop it says I am...

You'll need to contact your ISP and have the DSL service moved to the new line. The laptop sees the mdem or router and thinks it's connected, but the red internet light tells you the connection is not complete to the phone company.

I cannot stay connected to internet, my model 2701HG-B 2wire at&t dsl will start flashing red then disconnect me from the internet or my game site, how can i get this to stay fluently connected please!

You might want to try disconnecting everything EXCEPT the power cord. If you still get the red power light (it should stay there forever) then bring the gateway to Radio Shack or somewhere they have a 5 volt DC @ 2 amp power supply and plug it in for 5 to 10 minutes and see if the power light then stays green. If it stays green then all you need is a new power supply! If not, then the gateway is fried. Mine keeps going from a solid green power light to a flashing green power light and I can hear a relay click every 2 minutes at which time a pop-up say "ethernet line disconnected". I tried new power supply etc. to no avail! It is fried after 1.5 years! No more 2wire for me!

I have a 2Wire 2701HG-B Gateway. The power light stays red and the internet light is green. I have had no problems with this machine in the past and there was no warning for the problem. I have heard it...

1. your power adapter is possible faulty
and the port for the internet is still getting connection signal or the RJ45 is connected and this green light is saying it is connected.
check the AC plug to see of it is properly connected.

that is typically a bad username in the modem, you will have to put there temp user name in for registration for the DSL. and after that you can put the username into the modem that you created during the registration process. Should be taken care of.
