SOURCE: it will not do zig zag

Is the machine older? If it is, it could be sticking. Try using sewing machine oil on it. Put it in Z.Z. mode and try to wiggle it left to right. If it will go back and forth but sticking oil it for sure SEWING MACHINE OIL ONLY. not 3n1 oil Turn the handwheel one rotation and try to wiggle it left to right again.

Independent repair shops will work on any model, it's the parts they have no control of. The good thing is that we have ebay, where most hard to find parts always pop up. All or 95% of sewing machine stores here in Bay Area Ca. sell and service PFAFF, even vintage metal mechanical models.

SOURCE: The zig zag is not working on my machine. It

Good day!!!!

Please try this simple procedure to fix your problem:

    • 1. Read through your sewing machine manual and make sure that you have the correct settings for sewing a zigzag stitch. Set the proper stitch length and width as instructed.
    • 2. Try some of the simple things first. Remove the bobbin plate using a screwdriver and then remove the bobbin. Clean out any lint that may be under the bobbin and which may cause your zigzag stitch not to work. Replace the bobbin and the bobbin plate and test your zigzag stitch.
    • 3. Follow the directions in your sewing machine manual and oil the components of the sewing machine that rub against each other, as a lack of lubrication can prevent your needle from moving back and forth.
    • 4. Reset the timing, which affects how your presser foot and feed dogs work together, by adjusting the cam of your sewing machine. Look at your machine's manual to find the exact location of the cam, usually at the back of your sewing machine. Loosen the screws in the cam and turn it clockwise to increase the speed or counterclockwise to reduce the timing.
    • 5. Check the tension on your sewing machine, as too much tension may pull the threads too tightly and loose tension may not pull the threads tight enough. Set it at the middle range and test it from there, trying to make a zigzag stitch using a greater or lesser tension.
    • 6. Take your sewing machine to a professional repair shop if you have tried all of the other steps and still cannot sew a successful zigzag stitch.

I hope this information will be helpful...

Thanks for using fixya..

Zig-zag settings

you probably shouldn't be using a zig zag for that application. But the multi-stitch zig zag.

Please look at page 40 of your manual for information.

As for needle breaking check to make sure your need is the correct one for the thread and fabric. Also make sure your pressure foot is the one recommended for the stitch. Consider this... most thicker fabrics require a longer stitch.

I have a Kenmore model 1690. The needle when it goes down does not hit the hole in the foot plate. It comes down too far to the left of the opening, making it impossible to use the machine. I have...

This machine, when you have it on straight stitch, will sew with the needle to the left. If it's hitting the pressure foot, you may have the wrong pressure foot on the machine. If it's hitting the needle plate when you have the pressure foot removed, it's possible you have set for zig zag and you have a straight stitch needle plate on the machine. I believe this machine came with 2 needle plates. One for straight stitch, and another for zig zag.

I cannot get my tension adjusted correctly. I have lost my manual. Can you give me some help. Also, do I need a separate foot for the zig zag stitch.

usually a tension of 3 or 4 is good
only if the presser foot not is not made for zig zag--all the presser foot's that I've seen on new machines do straight stitch & zig zag,, if the opening in the foot is large then manually try a zig zag stitch to see
