Question about Vacuums

1 Answer

I noticed the Roomba's brushes were not sweeping, or turning so they could sweep. There was a new sound coming from the machine, the sound of grinding nylon! Upon inspection, I determined the problem to be a heat melted gear support hole. The hole was no longer round but oblong. You could see a ridge of plastic around this hole. So melting I believe was the culprit. The gear that uses that hole was then able to tilt to one side, thereby allowing the gear to disengage from the drive train. I called Roomba on this, and they replaced the sweeper unit at no charge. it took about 3 days for the part to arrive. I think the gear slots need to be redesigned so they don't me melt under normal use. I am now noticing a similar issue with the wisker brush that sits out in front. A melted plastic gear retaining hole.

Be sure to keep your brush bearings clean. If they get clogged, the brushes don't turn and the drive sockets can get damaged.

I have a 550 that will not **** it drives around and thinks its doing a great job but does not pick up any dirt does anyone know what the problem is or where I can get it fixed ?

Have you cleaned out the dirt compartment? This compartment is very small and fills fast ... Roomba does not have a vacuum in it ... it just sweeps so make sure the brushes are working and in good order ... to test the brushes hold it up and turn it on make sure your fingers are clear of wheels and moving brushes before turning it on. Visually inspect to see if brushes are turning also check for hair and string around wheels and brushes.
dont forget to rate me Thx :) and good luck

My Roomba was bought at Christmas 2008 and now April 2009 the brushes that sweep the edges and bring in the crumbs etc...don't seem to be doing the trick...It leaves behind stuff it didn't used to leave...

have you tried unscrewing the little brush and cleaning underneath? mine wasn't turning properly and when i took it off lots of hair/fur was wrapped around the screw. try this and good luck.

Makes a clicking noise and stops after about 5 minutes

Ladies and gents,

I can't bear you moaning like this honestly! Here is the solution-

get your self a tiny 4 headed (philips screw driver) and test your ROOMBA

1) REMOVE THE RUBBER BRUSH AND RUN ROOMBA ON JUST THE BIG BRUSH

2) CHECK IF ROOMBA STARTES CLICKING AND ODES THE SAME THING

3) IF NOT PUT THE RUBBER BRUSH BACK AND REMOVE THE BIG BRUSH AND THEN CHECK IF CLICKING CONTINUES.

4) ONE OF THEM WILL BE THE CULPRIT. REMOVE THAT BRUSH AND YOU WILL SEE TWO 4 HEADED(PHILLIPS) SCREWS ON EACH END OF THE OFFENDING BRUSH- LOOSEN THE SCREW AND YOU SHOULD SEE LOADS OF HAIR AND FIBER ROUND THE BEARING.

5)TAKE THE BEARING OUT AND REMOVE ALL THIS HAIR-YOU WILL BE SURPRISED HOW MUCH THERE IS

6) PUT THINGS BACK TOGETHER AND ROOMBA WILL RUN LIKE NEW

i PROMISE!

Brush won't turn while sweeping

Does it smell like anythings burning if it's on for a while?

It could be that the belt is just stretched out and not keeping enough tension on the brush while its on the carpet. Once you tilt the vacuum up, there's no more friction, so it spins freely. I've had a few that did that.

The plastic gears that drive the sweep brushes strip out easily on these. You can get the company to repair it for you but they make it a big hassle. I opted to buy the gear set on EBAY and replace them myself.

Roomba turning off after 30 sec.

I was having the same problem. Roomba would run for 30 seconds and then stop. I tried everything -- then I took the small rubber brush out and removed the small nut at the end. It was packed with dust to the point that it could not turn easily. I cleaned it out and now it is working like a champ. I think the automatic shut down was just a sign that there was too much strain to turn the brushes.
