repair the system using the os cd here's how:
go to bios setup then find the boot sequence menu choose cd as 1st priority then reboot once the system is rebooted press any key should appear do it as it is then you'll be directed to xp setup just proceed until th elicense agreement then you'll see the repair,don't repair option press repair then the xp will take care of it just follow the instructions

With the description you have given, there are some symtoms of spyware application.
You may try updating the Anit-spyware. If you don't have one you can get a free copy of Anti-virus with Anti-spyware from free.avg.com
