You can also use a Eureka vacuum cleaner belt, can't remember the exact model, but the package says it's for most sewing machines. It's not the V belt, but it works on my Super Nova and it's 1.79 for two!

Can u do normal straight stiching with ovetlocker model 686 elna?

No. A serger is not made to do straight stitching. However, you can accomplish the look of straight stitching as long as it is on the edge of fabric. The serger trims fabric from the edge and encloses the raw edge with thread.

If you want straight stitching, you need a sewing machine. Go to a sewing machine repair shop and ask if they have an inexpensive old mechanical sewing machine...like an old Singer, White, Necchi, Kenmore--the old metal kind.

I was given a Necchi PL1036 and can find no info on it. I do not have manuel, new to sergers...is this machine worth the trouble to use?

if the serger is in good condition then perhaps all that is needed is
a manual, there are no free ones, but here is a link for a manual
http://www.sewingpartsonline.com/instruction-manual-necchi-pl1036-sewing-machine.aspx

I don't know that much about necchi sergers, but I do have 2 necchi
sewing machines one is mechanical and the other is electronic,
they are both good machines, I've never had any trouble out of
either one, and I've had the mechanical one for around 11 years and the
other electronic one for around 9, I make clothes and quilt on them.

I have a Necchi model 549. I have to hand turn the wheel in order for it to start to stitch then it will run, but as soon as I stop it needs to be hand turned again. it will not sew upholstery or heavy...

I have the same machine and have had a similar problem. My belt was just old though. You need a new belt. And once installed it must be adjusted properly for everything to work correctly. I changed and adjusted mine myself. Although Necchi parts are not available from the company any more, there are several places online that carry belts and a few other items. One is sewingpartsonline.com. The belt shows up under Necchi 541, but it lists compatibility with our machines (549) on the order page. The size belt is 12 5/8"-- with teeth (lug type). While the belt is being changed the shaft that holds the wheel needs to be cleaned and oiled. Also clean up any excess oil in the area with a sewing machine safe cleaning fluid. Clean the plastic wheel with a little dish detergent and water on a paper towel. Oil should not be put, or remain, on any plastic parts in your machine. Not many people want to fix these machines anymore, but I love mine and will probably keep it as long as I can keep it running. Hope you see this post and get your machine running again. Win

I just replaced the belts on my Necchi 535FA, but

If the belts are not tight enough they will slip, they should all be fairly tight but not like a piano string if you know what I mean.
As you do not describe what the machine is doing wrong I can not really say any more at present, except make sure there is no oil on the belts and the machine has no tight spots when you turn it over by hand.
