Question about HP ProLiant ML370 G4 Server

1 Answer

The system is setup using the RAID 5 config, now out of 5 drives it says 'OK' for 3 drives on 0, 1 & 2 and for 3 & 4 it says 'Replacement'. Is there any way of finding the correct Logical sequence of the drives. Also if we replace the remaining 2 with 2 new drives will it be able to recover? We have tried swapping the HDD in the remaining two slots but getting the same result, the message that appears is SLOT 1 Drive Array failure'

Before I post any further, I need to know and I need an honest answer... Did you get the drives mixed up after pulling multiple drives out at the same time? If so, how many do you suspect are mixed up? This is crucial info that I need to know in order to help you resolve this. If you mixed up the drives, that's a bummer, but we can still work with that and try to resolve this. Let me know...

Dont you have any levelling inside the machine? Go open and check.

When you have replaced the 2 defective drives with a new one, restart the computer and Raid 5 will automatically rebuild.

Windows server 2008 raid setup on a dell poweredge 2850

2 drives indicates they are RAID 1, which are mirrored. 2 x 36GB = 36GB. This is an industry standard config. If you make any changes you will lose the array making it RAID 0 (no RAID - no longer hot swap), and or the complete loss of OS / data.

Instead make another logical drive for data storage. You need three or four drives to set up as RAID 5, again an industry standard config.

Make sure to back up in all instances. GL

Windows 2000 server fails to load,

Even if the scan says all ok I suspect bad sectors. To confirm try making images of the drives.

If you are able to get good images you can try raid reconstruction software.

If you need help I would suggest http://FreeDataRecovery.us they offer both online data recovery and do-it-yourself data recovery

Dell poweredge t110 Raid 5 setup on PERC 100 raid config in bios stating Virtual drive degraded and drive 2 is in ready state...how do we remove from drive array and install a new on without data loss

In a RAID 5 config, you need at least 3 drives (you can have more however). A small part of every drive is then reserved for recovery data for the other drives. So two drives together hold all the data needed to restore a 3rd drive.

The Raid Controllers in the Dell Poweredge Servers are hot swappable. So you can just pull the faulty disk and then insert a new replacement drive in the same slot (Needs to be the same type and size or bigger. However, if the disk is bigger than the other 2, then only the size of the two other disks will be used on the new drive). The Raid controller will then see that there is a new disk and automatically start the recovery process. You will be able to see this when you open the Controller software. Once the recovery is done, the RAID 5 will be fully functional again.

While one of the disks is faulty or missing the two remaining disks will continue to work, but at the severely degraded performance. After the rebuild the performance will be back to the way it was before.

The rebuild can take more than an hour, depending on the disk sizes used.

There is also an option on some Controllers to select one drive as a "spare". Then you insert one more disk and set it as spare. It will not start working unless one of the other disks in the Raid fails. That's when it is used automatically as a replacement.

Want to run both Raid 5 (4 drives) and a single SATA boot drive

Download the latest beta BIOS 1238. I had the same problem when adding a Samsung 1TB HDD to my RAID config. Updating to BIOS v1238 solved the Intel RAID Matrix "hanging" instantly.

You can't download it through the official Asus support page yet, but there's a topic in the Asus support forum with a link. You could also call Asus support and request the file, or just download it here: http://rapidshare.com/files/186891601/P5B-Deluxe_1238.rar :)

Sata raid config

first check your bios & see what raid chips are enabled, usually there's 2. Your main raid is on the first 4 sata connectors, the other chipset probably controlls the remaining sata ports. So if there's an option to disable one raid chip, disable one, just not the one that you're using. I don't know what your bios screen looks like,so this is just a general view based on my experences with various boards, mainly asus.
