Have tried two different HP printers but have same results. Error signal that printer is not connected or communicating with computer. However, printing of documents and photo's occur without problems. Have Roxio 2009 and label printing software on computer. Also have light scribe external drive but disconnected light scribe with same results of not printng on CD/DVD.
Software for printing directly on CD/DVD comes up automatically and everything seems to work but doesn't. Has anyone experienced this problem? Could it be interference with other software on the computer?

Verify printer functionalityTo verify printer functionality, use the following steps:
Turn off the printer and then unplug the Parallel, Serial, or Network data cable from the back of the printer. This will ensure that the information is not being received from the computer or network.
Turn on the printer and verify that the word Ready appears on the printer display.
Print a self-test on the printer by performing the following steps:
Go to the on the printer.
Press the MENU key until INFORMATION MENU appears on the printer display.
Press the Item key until PRINT MENU MAP appears on the printer display.
Press the SELECT button. The printer should generate a print job.
Try to print a page using the software application or a document in question after attempting each item of the following workaround. This will help determine if the changes made have caused the desired results to occur.
Connect the printer directly to the computer. Use an IEEE/1284-compliant cable.
Print a Test Page by completing the following steps:
Click Start and then Settings and Printers .
Right-click the appropriate printer driver.
Select Properties .
Click the General tab and click the button in the lower right-hand corner that is labeledPrint Test Page .
If the error is not resolved, try a different IEEE 1284-compliant cable. If there is no possibility to direct connect, use a different network cable, or network port, on the hub. Simplify communication options depending on the specific printer. Use the Control Panel on the printer to turn off High Speed andAdvanced Functions . To turn off High Speed and Advanced Functions complete the following steps:
Press the MENU key.
Select CONFIGURE DEVICE .
Press I/O MENU and disable Parallel High Speed .
Press I/O MENU and disable Advanced Functions .
Connect the printer to a different location, change parallel/USB/network cables. Bypass switch/hub (if there is any).
For problems with certain applications or documents, try modifying the HP LaserJet printer series PCL6 driver settings, such as:
Use lower resolution, such as 600 dpi.
Enable or disable Send True Type as Bitmaps .
Disable the Print Optimization under Printer Properties => Advanced => Document Option .
Some more steps:
Try changing the personality type to Auto/PCL/PS in printer Control Panel.
If changing personality does not make any difference, remove the current driver completely (from Server Properties ), restart the system, and install PostScript (PS) driver.
While installing the printer driver, select the standard TCP/IP port if the default is HP Port , and vice-versa.
General troubleshooting tipsContinue to isolate the error by printing the job in question after applying each of the following suggestions:
Remove any additional memory that has been added to the printer after being purchased. Refer to the User's Manual that was supplied with the printer for memory removal instructions.
Try using a different Font within the application or document in question.
Try to print using the PCL5e driver that came with the HP LaserJet Printing System.
This is what the result for that error code is:- ERROR 49.XXXX A critical firmware error has occurred that caused the processor on the formatter to abort the operation. This type of error can be caused by invalid print commands, corrupt data, or invalid operations. In some instances, electrical noise in the cable can corrupt data during transmission to the printer. Other causes include poor quality parallel cables, poor connections, or specific software programs. Remove all EIO devices and firmware DIMM if installed. Restart printer. If error is gone replace each EIO device until error appears. Replace device which triggers error. May also be formatter. Firmware updates are available for some machines at http://hp.com and clicking on the drivers and software tab. Also try printing from a different application. If that works go back to the first application and try printing a different file to determine if the problem is file related. You may need to reseat the memory DIMM's or replace the firmware DIMM or formatter board.

Sometimes the scan error (when the printer itself works) indicates that the HP monitor isn't running (due to incomplete install or turning off the program (not letting it run at boot, for example). The other cause is a poor connection since scanners need bi-directional communication with the computer. Try a new data cable, plugging into a different port. If you have a print server or USB hub, try a direct connection.
Solved by trial and error.
I went through every type of paper and printer combination listed in the Printer Preferences and eventually found a system compatible with Roxio EMC 10.
This by setting "Commercial Paper" and Neato 3-Disc Paper.
Whilst this is probably the incorrect way to do it, it has solved the problem and I can now print directly onto CD via my HP C5280 All in One Printer.
Tip. If you set Print preview before printing you can determine what the finished article will look like without having to wast numerous Discs trying.
Have you tried a different driver eg. rpcs or another version of pcl?Have you checked your workstations services app to check if your print spooler is running?Also when you print a config page from the hp it will give you your network details.To eliminate your network grap a crossover cable and connect directly to the printer and test.Let me know.
your printer does not support CD label orinting. though you can still print CD labels but with some softwares. there are HP printers that prints CD labels. Check them out.

These printers comes with a special software that enables them print on CD labels. Also try to get their softwares and see if you can interface them with your own printer and them print. Else you may have to get one of these printers that support CD labelling. Cheers!
I'm confused.. Are you trying to print to a CD/DVD Drive? Try the print job again, and choose the C5500 as the print device.. Seems that there may be a problem with the print device set-up , and you may have to delete the printer, and reinstall it.
If the printer is designed to print a label on a CD / DVD. then you will have to use the programs provided to accomplish this, as it requires formatting parameters be sent along with the print request. I.E. You can not cut and paste directly to a CD / DVD printer..
