SOURCE: Grinding Sound
Sounds like the brakes have become noisy, just like in an automobile if they glaze over they start to squeak. This really wont hurt the machine but if you dissasemble the machine (or pay a professional at the most 1.5 hr labor since your washer is the best design and fairly simple to repair) and clean the brakes (basket drive assy) and the drum (part of the tub support)

SOURCE: my roper washer won't spin
You should probably remove the water by hand if it will not pump and then pull the unit out far enough to get behind it.
Have a bucket handy to drop your water supply hoses into since they will drain.
Back panels are mostly held on by a handful of screws (no more than a dozen) and once removed, you can peer inside with a flashlight.
If you see leftovers from a shredded belt, cheer! The transmission would be far more costly to replace.
The belt can be had many places but I suggest you go to Sears website, then the parts department with your machine model number handy. They have a huge collection of parts illustrations for thousands of machines and Roper (now a Whirlpool company) is a common name. You should be able to get the mfrs. part number there and then search further or buy it from Sears.

It sounds like you may have a broken motor coupling. This is a common problem that usually occurs through normal wear and tear. Replacement couplers are more resilient and resist breaking much better. If the washer will fill, will not agitate or spin, but will still drain, these are the symptoms of a broken motor coupling. The accompanying noise of the motor engaging and a rattling/grinding sound is also a common symptom. This is a very simple and inexpensive repair. The following link explains step-by-step how to replace one:
The part number is included in the link I provided. You can purchase a replacement on line at appliancepartspros.com for about $11.
If you have any questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.
NOTE: Roper is manufactured by Whirlpool and uses Whirlpool parts, so these instructions will apply.
