To be able to operate on complex number you must set the calculator Compl mode to a+ib. You have to press F2(a+ib)

Press the F2 key corresponding to tab a+ib (complex)
Now if you enter what is on the next screen capture you get the correct result.

There is another way to enter complex numbers: the polar form. It corresponds to the F3 tab r<Theta

With angle set to degrees, you can enter complex numbers in r(r,theta) form (use [SHIFT][X,Theta,T] sequence to enter the wedge). Heis a sample.

I magnified the screen capture before pressing the Post it button, but I dot vouch that the system will respect my wishes. Sorry if pictures are too small for your confort.

Where is the ab/c button in the TI 83 plus caculater?

There is no button, otherwsie you would have discoved it. However you can use a command called [|=>Frac] or [ToFrac]. It is accessible through the key sequence [MATH][1:ToFrac]
To use it , you enter the numerator and denominator of your fraction, and before pressing [ENTER] , press [Math][1:ToFrac]. Thus by pressing the key sequence, you force the result to be displayed as a reduced fraction.
