To get 5.1 you need to have an optical/co-axal/hdmi input in to the speakers to get 5.1 and then the dvd player must have one of them as an out put

hope that helped

I have an old Philips Amplifier which I bought 18 years ago. The Amp actually can handle 5 speakers but I only connect 2 speakers (L & R). When I play certain DVD, although the background music sounds...

If you identified the specific products involved we (and you) might be able to look at the documentation and verify the obvious answer. Voice is generally concentrated on the center channel, so, yes, a speaker there would be a good idea.

If you don't have a multi-channel rig you shouldn't feed multichannel audio to it. Maybe use the unidentified DVD player's analog output and make sure it's set to mix the channels down to stereo.

Can I connect this to my tv? If so how-can't figure out how.

Sure, if your TV has some kind of audio outputs (and volume controls) for the "audio 5.1 inputs" you see in this picture.

You COULD adapt the probably-present stereo audio from your TV for use with the front channels . Stereo.

Just need advice regarding connection to a speaker system, ( altec-lansing ADA885).

a portable DVD player usually doesn't have speaker or line outputs, if yours does just those (red and white) and connect to audio in of the altec lasnings. if no audio output connectors, use the earphone jack with an adaper (1/8 stereo male to stereo pair rca male.

I can hear the music when playing dvd's on my Spectoniq dvd player, but can't hear when people talk. Can anyone help me?

Yes, I can help you. Your DVD player should have output connectors in the back of it to plug your amplifier or receiver into. If you have a Stereo system (no surround sound speakers, or front center speaker) connect the DVD Audio Cables on the back of the DVD player to the STEREO Output Jacks. If it is connected to the Left Front and Right Front jacks of the "Surround Sound" output jacks instead of Stereo is that the dialog on is sent to the CENTER channel output. If you have no center channel speaker you will not hear it.
If you have a surround sound system with two speakers in front and two speaker in back. Then you need to make a change in the Receiver Setup (Which may be set up for 3 speakers in front) so that it is set up for 2 speakers in front.
The last thing my simply be that you have a center channel front speaker that is not completely connected because of a wire falling off, etc.
Hope this helps,
Best,
Mark

Altec Lansing VS3251 rear left channel not working

Sounds like you "blew" the left channel. Make sure your connections are good, and all positives and negatives hooked up the way they are meant to be. If it still does not work, take it to be repaired. Call around first, with the AND serial number. Get repair estimates, ask about the "bench charge"

5.1 Surround Sound

Only Encoding will work unless you had a converter witch is in the hundreds of dollars yes a DVD movie will most likely help you achive the 5.1 but music like a mp3 no way unless you had the equipment to convert it to 5.1 and why would you want to do that? Anyways yes a DVD even Blueray will bring out the results.. Enjoy!!

Can the Altec Lansing VS3251 5.1 work with a Xbox?

Because this system is made to work with the PCs, it has a 3.5 mm stereo input. The 360 has rca cable outputs. Fortunately, the signal is the same and all you need is a 3.5 mm to rca y adapter that you can find at radioshack or any local electronics store.

My philips dvd player 5.1 have female ports at back side for audio but i have the sound system of LG which has simple naked wire to connect .

Philips DVP 3256 has 6 outputs which takes in RCA connectors
Altec lansing VS3251 has 3 STEREO outputs.
Buy 3 nos of STEREO (female) to RCA (male) cables
1. Connect the Altec's green wire to first stereo-to-RCA cable. RCA ends to DVP 3256's Front left and Front right
2. Connect the Altec's black wire to second stereo-to-RCA cable. RCA ends to DVP 3256's Rear left and Rear right
3. Connect the Altec's orange wire to third stereo-to-RCA cable. RCA ends to DVP 3256's Centre/Sub woofer. Interchange RCA ends if the Subwoofer sounds dull.

Good Luck
