SOURCE: ACER ASPIRE ONE KEYBOARD REPLACEMENT

I have opened and worked on several laptops over the years. I can tell you that there are many things you have to remove sometimes (depending on the brand and design) in order to replace the keyboard. Unless your comfortable doing this I would suggest taking it to a computer repair shop. I'm sorry this is not really the answer you were looking for, but It can get complicated sometimes. You will enjoy your computer sooner and if a shop changes it for you, then they will have to warranty their work if something goes wrong. Could be to your benefit. Thanks!

I have a Gateway keyboard model number KU-0833. I

Hi lal1220,

I had the exact same problem with my keyboard (KU-0883). What you want to do is first go into your "Control Panel". From there under "Hardware and Sound", go to "View Devices and Printers". Right Click on your USB Keyboard and go to "Region and Language". Under the "Keyboard and Languages" tab click on "Change Keyboard". From the "General" Tab click on "Add". Scroll down to "English (Canada)" and expand it by hitting +. Uncheck "Canadian French" and "Canadian Multilingual Standard". Then press "OK". After which you press "Apply" and "OK". Give your computer a quick reboot and your good to go.

The slash key under the ? shows up as a e with an accent why?

To the right of the "space-bar" on the keyboard, hold down the ALT GR ("alternate graphic") key, press the "slash" key, and release the ALT GR key.

Or, in "Regional Settings" within "Control Panel", change your "input method" to "US-English" keyboard, rather than some French or French-Canadian input method.

Why are some of my keys showing É or é

sounds like your keyboard is speaking another language. Go to control panel, regions, and make sure that English is selected.

Chose Canadin French instead of Canadian English by accident

Hello,
Yes you are right: it is a one time option. You can however install other languages. You will switch from the Canadian French keyboard to the US or English Canadian keyboard by pressing Shift Alt. You will console yourself if I told you that I type mainly in French, but the physical keyboard is US and I cannot even use the Alt + Ascii code to put the accents where due, because the laptop does not have numeric pad.

Hope it helps.

KEYBOARD PROPLEM

Hi Sam,

Sorry your problem got left in the que for a while, but Lee apparently wasn't familiar with that keyboard. You do have an extra key near the start button that activates the Tags and other coloured symbols while in french or multi language mode. Simply use it like a shift key.

If you're not using the HP to type in french and don't require the accents you can change the setting in windows to tell the computer that your keyboard is a US english keyboard which will reassign all the keycodes to the "normal" locations by english speaking standards.

To do so, open your control panel, click on the classic mode link if it's not already in classic mode(20+ icons). Then click on the regional settings icon. Depending on wether you have Vista or XP the panel varies slightly XP has a keyboards tab, Vista has a Input Devices tab. Either way go to that tab and click the button to adjust input devices, on the page that pops up you will see a list of available, installed keyboards. If US english isn't listed click the ADD button find it in the list and add it.

If you only type in english, remove all other keyboards. If you use french as well, remove all but the canadian french/canadian multilingual depending which you have(if you don't know follow instructions below to find out). Then OK out of the window. OK the regional settings window and close the control panel. If you only select US english you're done, if you left French as an option you will see a small blue icon to the left of the clock, you can click on it at any time to switch between your installed keyboard modes.

Hope this Helps FixYa!

Chris

Model info for your product can be found at www.hp.com click Support & Drivers, then select the Knowledgebase button on the next screen and type in your full model number or allow the automated link to check your model online. When it launches your product page select Product Specifications from the long list in the middle and if it brings up a second list select the same.

You can now scroll down the specs and your keyboard will be listed as either Canadian English/French/Multiligual, all three have some variation of the keys you described.

Logitech cordless desktop mx 3200 laser keyboard - french characters

Its not the keyboard fault but your operating system. I'm going to assume you live in Canada and when you had setup the computer for the first time you had selected Canada has country you live in instead of the United States (default) If you notice on your desktop or taskbar there will be a keyboard logo. Click it and select US 101 keyboard (United states). You get the french symbols because microsoft thinks because you live in Canada you must be french canadian.... stupid eh! They have it selected to mulitlingual Canadian. Select the US English as default and you shouldn't get those french symbols when you really want the shift or question mark key.

I live in Canada and I see looks of people who ask me the same question all the time.

Hope this helps!

Keyboard

that means that the keyboard has been set to a different language. On my screen at the bottom right hand is a little keyboard icon and when i click on it it lets me scroll through US English, Canadian French and Canadian Multilingual Standard. If the keyboard is set to the Canadian French option (or whatever other option that is available on your keyboard in red characters) the number two button changes function.
