I need to change my 3 prong to a 4 prong

Unplug the dryer then remove the terminal block cover and disconnect the 3-prong cord from the dryer. Note that the cord has red , black, and white wires but sometimes the red and black wires are both replaced by same color wire, usually gray and can switch places. There's also a ground strap wire also connected to the center terminal together with the white (neutral) wire.

Get yourself a 4-prong cord and note that it has red, black, white, and green/yellow wires but sometimes, like the 3-pronged one, the red and black wires are both replaced by same color wire, usually gray and can also switch places. All you have to do now is connect the 3 wires in the same manner they are connected as 3-prong cord to the terminal block. The ground strap wire now just need to be connected to the remaining 4th wire, the green/yellow wire instead of the center terminal together with the white (neutral) wire. Reinstall the terminal block cover and it's done.

It can be observed that converting a 3-prong cord to 4-prong cord is merely splitting the neutral line and the ground thereby increasing the number of prongs from 3 to 4 whereas, on the other hand, converting a 4-prong cord to 3-prong cord is merely joining the neutral line (white) and the ground (green/yellow) thereby reducing the number of prongs from 4 to 3.. I have a four prong clothes dryer plug that needs to go in a three prong outlet - 220v. Any ideas?

It's either you convert the 3-prong outlet to 4-prong or the 4-prong cord to 3-prong. But the latter is easier and more feasible. Unplug the dryer then disconnect the 4-prong cord from the dryer. Note that it has red, black, white, and green/yellow wires but sometimes the red and black wires are both replaced by same color wire, usually gray. The red and black wires are lines L1 and L2 reversibly, meaning they can switch places, while the white and green/yellow wires are the neutral line and ground, respectively.

Get yourself a 3-prong cord and note that it has red , black, and white wires but sometimes, like the 4-pronged one, the red and black wires are both replaced by same color wire, usually gray and can also switch places. All you have to do now is connect these 3 wires in the same manner they are connected as 4-prong cord to the terminal block. The wire strapped to the dryer cabinet and connected to the green/yellow wire of the 4-prong cord wire is now left hanging. The last step is to connect this hanging strap wire to the same terminal on the terminal block (center) where the white wire (neutral) is connected and it's done.

It can be observed that converting a 4-prong cord to 3-prong cord is merely joining the neutral line (white) and the ground (green/yellow) thereby reducing the number of prongs from 4 to 3. On the other hand, converting a 3-prong cord to 4-prong cord is merely splitting the neutral line and the ground thereby increasing the number of prongs from 3 to 4. My dryer's power cord has 4 prongs, my wall socket has 3 holes, can I change the power cord, or is there an adapter to change from 4 to 3 pronges.

Un screw the 2 hex screws from the back of the dryer where the cord goes in.

There will be 3 screws that connect the cord to the dryer, loosen or remove them to remove the 4 prong cord.

A hardware store will carry the 3 prong cord you need, tell them it is for a dryer.

Re-connect the 3 prong cord to the dryer.

Plug in and test after you have installed the new cord.

Howe do i replace my whirlpool dryers power cord

Unplug the dryer and pull it away from the wall.

On the back of the dryer near the top you will see a metal cover, usually just above where the cord comes out.

Unscrew any screws in this cover, usually only 1 1/4 inch or 5/16 inch screw that may also have a phillips or common screw head.

Once this cover is removed observe the cord going to the back of your dryer. There will either be 3 wires connected to 3 posts or 3 wires connected to 3 posts and one wire connected to the cabinet.

Remove the wire connected to the cabinet first.

Next unscrew the 3 screws holding the plug onto the terminal. Depending on how the end of your cord is made you may be able to just loosen these and pull the cord down or have to remove them completely. Do not drop these in the dryer!

Now just replace the cord with the new one and refasten the screws. Make sure they are extremely tight where the cord connects to the terminal block.

If you have a 3 prong cord with 3 wires the middle wire must go to the middle terminal and the other 2 can go on either side.

If you have a 4 wire cord the white wire will go to the center terminal, the black wire will go on either the left or right post and the red wire will go on the left or right post. One wire per post!

The last green wire will attach directly to the back of the dryer, usually with a 5/16 screw. This is just your ground wire.

Hope this helps.

My car doesn't have compresion in the engine,

did you use a compresion tester? If so do a dry test on each piston then a wet test. This is done by just hooking the tester to the spark-plug hole and testing it write the PSI down the put very little oil in the hole on the piston like a small squart from a oil can then re-connect the tester and re-peat the test if the number is higher the the dry test you have bad piston rings. If the number is the same the you need to pull the head or heads off and have them checked at a good mechine shop.

Correctyly wiring power supply to Kenmore dryer

A three wire pigtail is connected thusly. The two outer wires go to the two outer terminals on the dryer, the center lead goes to the center of the dryer terminal block. If its a four wire pigtail, the outer leads go to the two outer terminals on the dryer, the white goes to the center terminal. The jumper strap on the center is removed and the green goes to chassis ground.
