Where are the capacitors

Hi Catherine Oakley, I want to help you with your problem, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box? Why do want to check any capacitors, Catherine ? They are inside the case of the TV (everywhere, there are many of them). You might risk electrocution if you open the case, and damaging other components inside in a non-obvious way. Further, it not always easy to test a capacitor in situ (sometimes it is obvious though). Anyway, what do you plan to do once you have tested them ? Replacing any defective ones is probably going to be nearly impossible for you.

well i bought and paid alot of money for my tv, only after about 9 months it started playing up and not coming on i thought maybe because is cold, but after a few months it wouldnt even come on.. had a read online and apparently its a common fault. lg told me i should contact my supplier but my supplier was dixons which closed down and is now part of another company (currys) noone wanted to help me.. now i'm stuck with a tv that only comes on if i warm it with a hairdryer and only says on if my central heating is on full. cant afford to take it to an engineer because they cost a fortune before even fixing the tv

I am afraid I can offer no solutions. I assume you have checked the obvios things, like is power getting to TV (when it's not working). Do any lights come on when it isn't working or is it completely dead ? I assume your TV is out warranty (12 month) [for what the warranty is worth]. If the fault is common, has no-one come up with solution ? It may be a lot of things, but it sounds like you got a TV that was "made on Friday afternoon". It may be poor quality components such as the capacitors you mention, or resistors, or a poor solder joint(s) or circuit board flexing (poor design). I think the options you have are to take it to repair centre, either authorised or independent, consult a Consumer Body (which will depend on where you are) or do not let the matter drop with LG or Currys. Sorry. 18.April.2014

Toshiba 19w330db was coming on until i change acap on little board from330uf 25v put in 440uf 25v now no power

Replacing a 220Mfd capacitor with 440Mfd wond poise this problem. Just check, whether the the polarity of the repalced capacitor have been reversed. Electrolytic capacitors have both +Ve and -Ve terminals. It reversed, the capacitor will insert a short circuit, when you switch ON the set. On some occations, it will heat up and will burst out. Check this first. The polarity of electrolytic capacitors will be marked on the printed circuit board too. Check whether the markings at the printed circuit board matches with the polarity of electrolytic capacitor you have recently replaced.

I have a panasonic th-42px70a you turn the tv on and then it turns itself off

That symptom of your televisions have problem in power supply. The power supply have some deffective parts like the capacitor. The capacitor is totaly leak that cause of voltage drop. The output voltage dosen't continue because of leak capacitor, the leak capacitor is mildly shorted. So try to check the capacitor and replace all leak capacitor. The leak capacitor can identify through visual checking if you don't know how to use capacitor tester. The leak capacitor is rounded shape at the top and sometime have moise.Try this sugestion.hope will it help you.Thank you..

I have a Mach3 unit with 1 capacitor 35uf 370 VAC and a fan capacitor, unit trips breaker after cooling RV when system starts up again, shouldn't there be a run, start, fan capacitor? only have 2...

You need to check the Amp draw at start up of the compressor. Also if you have a meter that can check the compressor capacitor, it needs to be checked. If the capacitor is ok and the compressor starts at a higher Amp draw than the rating on the capacitor, you will need a start capacitor.

Motor trys to start but will not turn.

There is a capacitor called a start run capacitor for your compressor.
It will try to start but won't run.
Check the capacitor, if it looks swollen then its bad.

If thats is the fan motor, it also has a capacitor, check that as well

If both capacitors are good then your compressor or fan motor is bad

My sound and picture are out of sync on my new 47" LG LCD TV. Some channels are worst than others. I thought this was a cable issue but not sure. They were of no help when I contacted them. Is this a TV...

I have the same problem. LG47LX9900 delivered 22nd October. Phoned Currys for help and they were hopeless. Some channels are definitely worse than others. Any help appreciated.

The problem could be the capacitor for the compressor motor or the compressor motor. Use a multimeter with the capacitor test function to check it or take the capacitor to a heating and air supply and they can check it for you. If the capacitor looks swollen then it is bad. If the capacitor is good then use an ohmmeter to check the compressor motor windings. Connect one lead to common then the other lead to Run then Start, reading the meter when you connect the lead. The capacitor is a common failure.

How i check capacitors with multi meter

Ideally you want to check a capacitor with a proper capacitance meter although it can be possible to check them with a multimeter.

If the size of the capacitor is very small, say mircofarads you probably wont be able to test it, however we will give it a try.

Discharge the capacitor first by shorting out the pins. BE WARNED!! IF IT IS A LARGE CAPACITOR OR A CAMERA CAPACITOR DO NOT ATTEMP THIS!! Capacitors can be very dangerous if handled incorrectly.

Find the polarity of the capacitor, there should be a black stripe that runs up the side of the capacitor with a negative sign in it, the leg that is closest to that is the negative.

Set your multimeter to resistance, 10k-1M ohm. Put the probes on the legs of the capacitor and instantly watch the display. The multimeter should show close to 0 ohms and then start increasing slowly. This is because the battery in the multimeter is actually charging the capacitor through the test probes.

If the capacitor shows this pattern then you are pretty much assured that it is working properly.

I must say again though, please be careful around capacitors as they can be very dangerous.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa

My outdoor unit fan rotates slowly and compressor trips after 3/4 minutes

The compressor is probably tripping on high discharge pressure due to the slow fan rotation. That can be caused by a weak capacitor or the fan motor failing. The capacitor can be checked with a multimeter that has the capacitor check function. The capacitors are inexpensive but the fan motor will be another story. You should also check the voltage going to the fan motor.

First thing to do is to check the capacitor if you have a meter to check it would be great if the capacitor is good check the motor windings using a continuity test with your meter then you if you have to change your compressor or your capacitor

RAD 9p shutting off Have checked all capacitors

The capacitors need to checked with an ESR meter. Althought capacitors sometimes bulge when they go bad this is not always true. Capacitors change value internally very easily when the conditions are right. High heat.

You can send this to my company for repair or if you need more help go ahead and email me.
