Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer is to take the memory card from the camera and put it into a card reader, either built-in to the computer or attached via USB or Firewire.
Once the card is in place, the card will appear to the computer as just another hard drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop to copy/move the files from the card to the hard drive or wherever you want them. Or you can use any photo management program such as Picasa ( http://picasa.google.com ).
