Maybe your transfer belt is damaged. If u have an spare belt replace it for a test. Answer me if it dont work. Maybe i can get an support manual for u. I work in a HP partner company.

It sounds like a defective toner cartridge. Try replacing it. If that does not cure the problem, then the fuser assembly needs to be replaced, in which case it is probably cheaper to buy a new one.

This is a laser printer, neither a copier nor a multifunction unit, therefore it has no glass. At least, I cannot find any glass in it.
I finally had an authorized Ricoh repair center examine it and found streaks on the black unit that pulls out of the right side (I forget the part's name, <$90). We replaced it and things are better but streaks of color remain. They suggested replacing the color one (about $400) but the cost is prohibitive right now, so I'll live with those streaks.
On a related note, I remain unimpressed with this printer's quality and inconsistency. For example, greys often print in pink; nothing has ever resolved this. I refuse to put any more money into it. When I can afford to do so, it will be replaced, probably by a Xerox Phaser.

It may be the fuser. Take it out and inspect the roller on it:

SOURCE: 2 IN. GRAY AREA DOWN SIDE PAPER
I too began to have vertical grey streaks on output from my trusty LaserJet 4 Plus.
If I printed a page from text pad with just a single period on it the streaks were there, varying shades of gray in varying widths from 1/4 inch to 2 inches.
I noticed the transfer roller was soiled in a way that matched the streaks and so was the green colored drum in the toner cartridge.
I cleaned the toner cartridge and transfer roller and that completely solved the problem.
1. Cleaned transfer roller with old clean white dry t-shirt. Kept gently wiping toner off until it seemed pretty clean. Find info on web about how to remove the transfer roller in the service manual.
Get service manual by searching for LaserJet 4 on this web site:
(you have to download it in several parts as .rar files, put all the rar files in one folder and then open the first .rar file with a program like Power Archiver and it will add all the files together into one big PDF file of the service manual) 2. Cleaned the half of the toner cartridge that houses the green drum roller. I followed the steps in Part 1 on this web page:
http://www.oddparts.com/ink/hp-4.htm 2A. I removed the green drum and wiped that off with old cotton t-shirt then set it aside out of the light. 2B. I cleaned the little roller (PCR roller) mounted behind the green drum, inside the toner cartridge with a slightly damp piece of cotton t-shirt, rubbed gently for quite a while to get to the white underneath the old toner. Did not get all of the toner off. Did not submerse this roller, just used slightly damp cloth. 2C. Detached the piece of metal that keeps old toner trapped in a compartment and also gently wiped toner off the plastic blade on it that is called the wiper blade. 2D. I scooped out old toner and then vacuumed out the rest from behind the metal piece described in 2C. Reassembled and no more streaks, totally clean page output.
