SOURCE: john deere model 14sb lawn mower repair

Check for bad bearing in clutch immediately, Remove belt, try and turn the clutch pulley if it is hard to turn or feels rough, replace the bearing in the clutch. If you do not replace bearing immediately you will be buying a $300.00 clutch very soon. I know from experience. You possibly have been hearing a loud unusual roar from engine area for awhile and wondered where it was coming from. As these bearing will usually squall a cry for awhile before they die.

SOURCE: Need to replace clutch/blade brake on push mower :)

Check the cable that goes from the handle to the engine. It might be broken. Have someone pull the handle and you watch to see if it moves on the other end. The cables will break and will not open the brake so you can pull start it. The cable should be under $20.
Let me know it this is the problem.

Why dose the blades keep turning when mower is disengaged

If the machine has a manual blade engagment, there is normally a small brake block that presses against the upper blade pulleys to slow and stop them, these may need replacing, if not then the drive belt may be dragging in the pulleys

Wont start put new battery and silnoid wont start

A riding mower has several safety interlocks that must be "made" for the mower to start.
The brake must be on.
The blades must be disengaged.
It may have to be in neutral.
Someone may have to be in the seat.
You have to locate these safeties and ensure that they are not malfunctioning.
The brake and blades safeties are probably on all machines.

Started up...then died as if safety switch 18HP craftsman rider

On later models there are possibly three safety switches, one under the seat, one for the blade engage mechanism or blade clutch so the blades don't turn when the mower is started, and a neutral safety switch to make sure the mower is in neutral before it starts.

Riding mower Safety Tips

Lawn mowers in general can be dangerous, but riding mowers and lawn tractors are even more so. Some models have better safety features than others. You’ll want to look for, at the very least: * A system that prevents the engine from starting unless the blade is disengaged and the machine is in neutral. * An automatic blade shut-off that stops the mowing blades if you stand up rather than sit on the machine, or if you leave the mower/tractor. * A system that stops the blade if you shift into reverse, or at least a lock that requires you to make a deliberate decision to mow in reverse.
