Check it with a multimeter and make sure that its showing at least 6 volts

The red button on the right must be held down for anything to move. It turns the lights on, makes some train noises, then moves forward. If you don't hold the button down, nothing will happen. Note that when the train is underway, the left red button becomes a train whistle. Otherwise, when the train is not running, that left button produces music. Hope this helps.

yes you should be able to just clip the speaker wires and it will still work but if you want to be on the safer side just hook up a LED (light emiting diode) from the wires the speakers went to.
