Woke up to no hot water. Checked and found the pilot light out. Followed instructions to re-light. The red button I was supposed to hold down while lighting the pilot went down with no effort and would...

The red button sometime hangs up if the dial is not centered up. First check to see if the button is going all the way down. it should touch the gray box that has the temp dial on it.

If the button is going all the way down and you are still not getting gas to the pilot to light the main gas valve needs to be replaced. I dont know what your skill levels are so I am not going to tell you to replace it on your own.

If you do have the skills then replace the main gas valve, which means you have to drain the tank, go to Lowes or Home Depot get a valve that matchs up with you gas. Is it Natural or L P you MUST match the proper gas valve to the gas.

Make sure you test the gas connections with lots of soap an water for any leaks. Water leaks are no big deal Gas leaks will kill you and your family. I have seen with my own eye a house that gone after a gas leaked over night and they turn on a light and it was all over for 3 people BE VERY CAREFUL

Thanks Richard

My heater control valve has a small leak it looks like water is dripping from it

Not enough information to fully answer question.

Control valve is usually associated with the gas line and gas control valve.
There should not be water dripping from control valve.

If you are uncertain about parts on gas water heater, I suggest calling service technician.
There are several advantages. The technician can service the appliance and ensure there is no dangerous gas leaks or dangerous CO vent leaks.
And if your water heater is rusted and leaking, then service technician can prevent a possible flood.

Some gas is heavier than air and settles to floor, so always check for gas smell near floor level.
The combustion product from a water heater contains odorless CO which is poisonous, and must be vented outdoors so it will kill other things besides you.
The service technician can also see maintenance issues since gas water heaters require yearly maintenance, and some require more frequent attention.
Finally the service technician can give you a few tricks and tips for taking care of your water heater.

If you add a comment with the brand, type and model number of water heater, I can possibly locate a manual for that product which can help both you and me understand your water heater better.

Upvote the help.

I have a 40 gallon rheem water heater for a mobil home that is leaking from the top.

40 gallon electric heater at Lowes costs 207, and is easy do-it-yourself using same basic information shown in link above for installing gas heater, except less work.

To have gas water heater installed, can run $2-300 for installation plus cost of heater.
40 gallon natural gas water heater at Lowes starts at $300+, and tanks with longer warranty cost more and last longer.
Trailers require specific type of gas water heater, so be sure to request correct model.

If you maintain the tank: keep chemicals out of same room as gas water heater, attach bare copper ground wire between hot and cold pipes, flush tank each 6 months, clean gas burner each year as shown in manual, read the manual entirely for specific information about your model, and inspect/replace anode rod every 2-3 years then basic 6-year tank can last much longer.

I have a Rheem 40 gal. tank that is leaking water front the top where the vent stack is. It is pouring out. Can it be repaired?

A leaking water heater cannot be repaired, assuming it's the tank leaking and not nearby water pipe.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-leaking.html

First thing is to protect your property from catastrophic tank failure where tank ruptures and water runs until it is shut off:
Tanks are under pressure when they are hot.
Close cold water shut-off located above tank.
Turn control knob to 'pilot' so pilot is lit but burner will not turn on.
Open hot side on tub for few moments to relieve tank pressure.

Now your property is safe.
You need a new water heater.
In mean time, gas water heater makes 41 gallons hot water per hour.
Shower used 5-9 gallons hot water.
Bath uses 10-15 gallons hot water.
You can turn on water heater for short stretches and limp by until you get a new heater.

I have an Americdan Water Heater 50 gal. gas. 38000BTU the pilot light does not stay lit. what can i do?

Usual problems are:. Bad thermocouple, Bad vent, blowing pilot outl. Too small of pilot flame. Low gas pressure Leaking water heater, dripping on pilot. Bad gas valve. If your water heater is more than 8 years old and the gas valve is bad, I would replace the water heater. IF you decide to replace the pilot or the gas vavle, be sure to mount pilot exactly as is was designed. If you replace gas valve get an exact replacment or a "listed" replacement. If you'rd doing this and it's older, replace the temperature/relief vavle also. Water heaters can be very dangeroius if not properly repaired/maintained.

I have a Rheem glas fury model 22-40 gas water - leaking

Dear Hank McNeal; I have successfully used a "boiler plug" to seal a water heater tank leak in 2007. It was a 100 gallon electric commercial hotel unit. To this day it's still in use. It depends where the leak is located....Predrilling the leak is necessary to be sure the plug will ernguage it's threads into good material... Start as small as possible, then use the best suited plug. they come in an assortment of sizes. rheem-glas-fury-model-22-40-gas-water-qbzdprdp3yetvbzozs4dsujq-4-0.jpg
