Camera Turns off when Display is rotated then closed
I just got a brand new camera yesterday but when I open the display and then flip it the camera turns off.
When the screen is to the side both flipped and un-flipped it works just fine, it only when I try to close the screen, even when the display is facing out, the camera shuts off.

This is a common problem with the flip out display feature. Either the little image inverter switch is bad on the flip out screen unit or the flex cable unit going to the display is bad. Sometimes that switch can be cleaned ,but if it's the cable it will need replacement. This problem is a display issue however ,so if you can rotate the display in another postion to where you can use the camera you can still use it. It will not effect the recording made. I fix these all the time . Repairs run from $40 to approx $165. Larry's Electronics 916-362-8708 [email protected]
There is a small flip type switch on the handset, it is located at the back under the top part of the cover where the camera is... If the flip is broken on the switch it will cause this... You can change the ribbon which contains the switch and it should solve your problems.
I have a Sony DCR-TRV30. Your camara is probably similar. On the bottom left outside corner of mine, there are two buttons, labeled "exposure" and "program AE," and a small thumb wheel above them. Set the indicator to "camera" and open the screen. Push the "exposure" button and a light grey rectangular screen with a minus sign on one end and a plus sign on the other will appear near the top left corner of the screen. Rotate the thumb wheel so that the small black square in the rectangular screen will move from the "+" side towards the "-" side while the image on the screen gets darker.
The flex strip is cut and thats why you are facing that problem ... please use it the way it works till you can ,,,,, when it completely goes dead have it replaced by a repairman ....

By rotating the display, users can use it to view their subject when taking low-angle, high-angle, and a wide range of other shots. When closed, the multi-swing display also ensures carefree portability by protecting both the lens and the LCD screen. The IR-500 is the first Olympus camera to feature a multi-swing display with 360° rotation capability. It is especially useful in Self Portrait Shooting. The multi-swing display's 360° rotation capability makes it easy to shoot self-portraits as well as other people and scenery. Users can view themselves on the LCD screen while shooting, and use the camera's Self Portrait mode to ensure optimum exposures.
