Typewriters have alimit to how far to the right or left that you can set margins. Once you use the alt & 6 key to bypass the current margin setting then move to the new setting then hold the alt key and touch the 7 key to keep it in the new position.

move the carrier to where you want the mar.set then hit the R MAR or L MAR key.
to move the carrier beyond the margins hit the MAR REL key

Hi:
First find the margin release key and press it once. Then use the spacebar to move the carrier forward and reset the right margin. Or again use the margin release key by pressing it once and then press and hold the backspace key to move through where the left margin was and reset it at the point where you want it.

Move carrier with the backspace or the spacebar.
Press and HOLD [ALT] while pressing the [4/$] key.
The left margin is now set.
Move carrier with the backspace or the spacebar.
Press and HOLD [ALT] while pressing the [5/%] key.
The right margin is now set.

Move the carrier to the desired position for the new left or right margin using "backspace" or "space"
To move beyond the position of a current margin, first position the carrier on the margin and press "alt +m rel"
When the carrier is on the desired position, press "alt + l mar" (if you are setting the left margin), or "alt + r mar" (if you are setting the right margin.)
The minimim distance between the left and right margins is two inches
