It's my understanding that aluminum foil can reflect the RF energy back into the magnetron and causing it to overload and fail. If the oven turns on but does not heat the food, you can just about bet the magnetron is shot.

Hello, Wezi. If the magnetron has failed, you should get an error code related to under-current in the magnetron power wires. It's quite possible that the problem lies within the control circuit board and/or the relay that supplies power to the magnetron. My 'over-the-range' unit also has a failing 'door closed' switch near the hinges and if the door is not detected to be closed, microwaves are not generated. However, when this happens, the timer does not count down. The door switches (mine has 3) are about $2.00 each at your appliance parts store and replacing it (or them) is quite straight forward once you get access to the hinges.

SOURCE: microwave will not heat food

Found this under Maytag instead of LG, but will be happy to help.

Generally, the most common causes of a failure to heat are:

- bad door switches or door switch mounts
- loose connection at the magnetron
- problem or loose connection on the control unit circuit board
- bad magnetron or other high voltage part

If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical safety information, info on door switch diagnosis and replacement, and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

Magnetron diagnosis is here: http://gallawa.com/microtech/mag_test.html

We're happy to help and we appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

SOURCE: Microwave oven coming on but not heating

I had the same problem with my Sharp OTR microwave/convection oven. I had 2 service reps out to look at it (Sears and Lowes) they both said it was the magnatron and would cost about $500.oo to repair it. I called Waverly's Appliance in Paris, TN and it turned out to be a diode. Total cost of repair was $35.00 including service call.

SOURCE: Paint damaged in side microwave oven

1) How is the cavity damaged? Is it just peeling paint, or is it rust? If it's rust then the microwave could be dangerous.

2) The antenna cap usually has a small hole in the centre, but if there are any other holes in it the magnetron itself could be damaged, and holes caused by the magnetrin arcing.

SOURCE: My microwave oven is not heating the food

HI, you will need to replace the heating device. This device is called the Magnetron and, it will cost you about $133.00. This is a repairable issue but, you will need to call for service. I do not recommend installing this device if you are not familiar with handling this type of tech.

Maybe. The presence of metallic material (foil, stainless steel silverware, etc.) in an operating microwave oven creates electric arcs between the foil and the inside wall of the oven. And this can destroy the electric components.

The paint came off because my grandaughter put aluminum foil in it. How can I repair the paint?

I would like to make a warning ,do not try to repair microwaves , they are lethal weapons , I know someone who ran one with the cover removed and cooked his kidneys , if it is faulty dispose and get new, if aluminium foil was put inside it has heated up and as you say damaged paint ,the seal could also be damaged and lethal , dispose and buy another .

Can we use alluminium container for baking cake

You can use an use aluminium foil containers, the very thin type. Use an ordinary thickness metal container, including aluminuim, and you will most likely blow the magnetron. Rule of thumb:- If in doubt, keep it out!

Would like to know how to use the Inverter. Is it for baking & defrosting? Have never used one before and do not have a manual.

Hi ifcope2000,

The inverter in your oven is for defrosting. It works on the basis of weight of the food to be defrost. To use the inverter follow the following steps.

First place the food on the microwave dish and then close the door.
Now press Inverter Turbo Defrost.
Enter the weight of the food using the number pads.
Press Start.Defrosting will start. The time will count down. Larger weight foods will cause a signal
midway through defrosting. If 2 beeps sound, turn over, rearrange foods or shield with aluminum
foil.

The food is safe as long as the food has not got oxidized aluminium on it.
Microwave energy is very high and will melt metals!
As long as it is not arcing any more there should be no problem.

Sometimes the arcing itself will cause black marks inside the oven. The places where the foil was melted, (touching), likely left small metal deposits, possibly now, impregnated in the surface. It is important to remove these if possible to avoid further arcing. Remove these then test to make sure the oven is functioning properly. If so, continue to use.
