SOURCE: whirlpool dishwasher
So i assume it fills with water then just sits there? this would be a wash motor problem,
It could be a blockage in the wash motor or an electrical issue.
Some of the whirlpool models have a start capacitor on the motor which can fail and would stop the motor from starting.
If you remove the lower front kick panel and look at the motor and if you see a white tube attached to the motor with 2 wires it is the capacitor which could be faulty.
If there is no capacitor then it is most likely an internal motor failure which would require a new motor.

Testimonial: "this doesn't solve my problem entirely.....but it gives me direction. As the dishwasher cost about 400 bucks and the motor alone would cost about 200, perhaps plus labor or LOTS of time on my part, I may be leaning toward just getting a new one. Thanks Very much"
