Dear download the Bios of IBM 300 from the internet web site www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-4PXNTP.html or www.retrevo.com/s/IBM-PC300-Desktops-review-manual/id/23186bh242/t/1-2/ - and install it.

You can change the boot up device order in the BIOS, make the CD as the first boot device. You can change it back after you have installed XP.

Change boot cd rom bios300

Your IBM 300 series desktop computer is normally set to boot its operating system directly from the installed hard disk drive.
There are some cases where you may want to boot from a different device, such as loading from the floppy drive to install a new operating system.
In order to change the boot order on the IBM computer you need to access the Basic Input Output System (BIOS) menu.

Close any applications that are still running.
Turn off the IBM 300PI computer and then turn it back on again.
Tap the "F1" key when the "Configuration/Setup Utility" prompt appears at the bottom of the screen.
Tap the down arrow key four times to highlight the "Start Options" entry.

Press the Enter key.
Highlight the "Startup Sequence" entry and then press Enter again.

Scroll down and highlight "First Startup Device."
Press Enter. Scroll through the list of available boot order devices.
Highlight the device you want to use, such as "CD Drive" or "Floppy Drive," and press Enter.

Press the "Escape" key twice.
Highlight "Save Settings" and then tap Enter.
Power off the IBM computer and then power it back on.

Can you install windows xp on a ibm 380ed laptop

Hi there,
You need to make sure your laptop meet the minimum hardware requirements for windows XP . (see below)
I believe your system has a Pentium MMX 166 MHZ processor which will not be able to run XP properly.
But that's not all, You also need to make sure IBM Lenovo provides drivers for all the hardware on your 380ED, which I don't believe it does.

Minimum hardware requirements

  • Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended)
  • At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended)
  • At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk
  • CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
  • Keyboard and a Microsoft Mouse or some other compatible pointing device
  • Video adapter and monitor with Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher resolution
  • Sound card
  • Speakers or headphones

Can't instal xp

You can try and tap on the F8 key when the computer is booting up and see if an optional boot menu pops up and if it does then select the CD-Rom Drive to boot from the CD, and if not then you will have to go into your BIOS setup and change the boot sequence to boot from the CD-Rom Drive first. Also, if you already have windows on the hard drive and you are using a modified boot screen you might get an error when you try to install XP.
