Question about HP Photosmart C4580 All-in-One InkJet Printer

Paper Jam/Stall - no paper jam

Same issue as others are reporting. One day I was printing some papers and it made a horrible sound. It still printed the sheet fine but after that it keeps stating there is a paper jam. The paper feeds in slowly and when it reaches about the half way point the paper stops and says "Paper Jam". No printing is done.

    There's nothing left inside because there was never an initial jam. I do suspect the sensor is what is damaged or dirty but I don't know where that sensor is located.

    pls. call the technian unless u can do it urself. there is still a small piece left in there or the slippers or sensor is affected.

My printer carriage has jammed.


To resolve the issue, you can try each solution in this document in the order presented.MPORTANT : Each time you try a solution, try to print a self-test report to determine if the hardware functions correctly. To print a self-test report, use the steps in the following table:Load plain white paper into the input tray.Press Setup on the product control panel.Press the right arrow ( ) to select Print Report , and then press OK .Press the right arrow ( ) to select Self-Test Report , and then press OK . The self-test report prints.Solution one: Turn the product off and on again Follow these steps to turn the product off and then on again to reset the printing mechanism Press the Power button to turn off the product. If the product does not turn off, continue to the next solution.Wait 60 seconds.Press the Power button to turn on the product NOTE:The product might go through a warm-up period. The product lights might flash and the carriage might move. Wait until the warm-up period finishes before you proceed. Try to print a self-test report. See the steps on how to print a self-test report at the beginning of this document.If these steps resolved the issue , and the self-test report prints , there is no need to continue troubleshooting. If the issue persists , continue with the next solution. Figure 6: Reinsert the duplexer Push the duplexer inward until it clicks into place.Step three: Clear the jam from the front of the product If you cannot remove the paper jam from the rear of the product, follow these steps to remove the paper jam from the front.Open the cartridge access door.Figure 7: Open the cartridge access door NOTE:The carriage should be on the right side of the product, out of view. If it is on the left side, close the cartridge access door, and then turn on the product. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet, and then open the cartridge access door again.Look for any pieces of paper or other debris inside the cartridge access area.Gently pull the paper out of the rollers.CAUTION:Remove paper from the front of the product as carefully as possible. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the product, more paper jams are likely to occur, and this could damage the print mechanism.Close the cartridge access door.Figure 8: Close the cartridge access door Reconnect the USB cable to the rear of the product.Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.plug the power cord back into the electrical outlet. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product. Reload paper in the input tray.try to print a self-test report. See the steps on how to print a self-test report at the beginning of this document.If these steps resolved the issue , and the self-test report prints , there is no need to continue troubleshooting.If the issue persists , continue with the next solution.If the self-test report does not print , continue with the next solution.Solution three: Make sure the carriage moves freely Use the following steps to make sure the carriage moves freely.Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product, if it is not already on.Open the artridge access door.Figure 9: Open the cartridge access door Without turning off the product, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.WARNING:You must disconnect the power cord to move parts by hand without the risk of an electrical shock.unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.Look inside the product to see where the carriage is stuck, and then check for any torn paper or other objects that might restrict the movement of the carriage.NOTE:You might need a flashlight to illuminate areas inside the product Figure 10: Use a flashlight to see inside the product Remove any loose paper or obstructions you find.Figure 11: Example of obstruction in carriage access area Reach inside the product through the cartridge access door, and then manually move the carriage. You might have to reach through the paper output tray to access the carriage.If the carriage is stuck on the right side of the product , move the carriage to the left side of the product.If the carriage is stuck on the left side of the product , move the carriage to the right side of the product.Make sure the carriage moves freely across the width of the product by gently pushing the carriage to the left, and then to the right.Close the cartridge access door.Figure 12: Close the cartridge access door. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.Plug the power cord into the wall outlet. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product. Try to print a self-test report. Message appears "Paper jam".


Paper jams can be true or false. A false paper jam occurs when the error message displays, but no jammed paper is in the product. The following solutions apply to both true and false paper jam errors.

Print a self-test report Use the following steps to print a self-test report.
  1. Load plain white paper in the input tray.
  2. Press Setup , and then press 2 . The Print Report menu displays.
  3. Press 1 to select and print a Self-Test Report
Solution one: Clear the paper jam Step one: Remove loose paper from the tray Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray and the output tray.

Step two: Clear the jam from the back of the All-in-One
  1. Figure 2: Remove the rear access doorc01562020.gif
  2. Gently pull any jammed paper out of the rollers inside the product.
  3. Carefully remove any scraps of paper that are still stuck in the product.
  4. Reattach the rear access door. Insert the two posts on the right side of the door into the holes on the product, and then push the door in until it snaps into place.
  5. Reconnect the power cord to the back of the product, and then press the Power button (c01602202.gif ) to turn on the product.
Step three: Clear the jam from the front of the All-in-One Follow these steps to remove the paper jam from the front of the product.
  1. Without opening the cartridge access door, check the tray for jammed paper that you cannot remove from the back.
  2. If you see jammed paper, gently pull it out.
Step four: Print a self-test report
  • If the issue persists , continue with the next solution.
Solution two: Make sure that the carriage can move freely Follow these steps to make sure that the carriage can move freely. Step one: Check the paper path

  2. Remove any paper or objects you find.
  3. Reach inside the product, and then manually move the carriage.
    • If the carriage is stuck on the right side , move the carriage to the left side of the product.
    • If the carriage is stuck on the left side , move the carriage to the right side of the product.
    • If the carriage is stuck in the middle , move the carriage to the right.
  4. Remove any paper or obstructions found.
  5. Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the product by gently pushing the carriage to the left, and then to the righ
Step two: Print a self-test report
  • If the issue persists , continue with the next solution.
  • If the self-test report does not print , continue with the next solution.
Solution three: Clean the rollers and the rear access door Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the paper feed rollers and cause paper jams and paper feed issues. Follow these steps to clean the paper feed rollers inside the product. Step one: Clean the rollers
  1. Press the Power button (c01602202.gif ) to turn off the product.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
  3. Press in the tab on the left side of the rear access door, and then pull the door away from the product to remove it. Figure 6: Remove the rear access doorc01562020.gif
  4. Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with bottled or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.
  5. Press the cloth against the rollers and rotate them upwards with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove any dust or dirt buildup. Figure 7: Rotate the paper feed rollersc00212278.jpg
  6. Make sure that the paper feed rollers on the rear access door are clean, free of paper bits, and rotate freely.
  7. Clean the surface and the rollers of the rear access door the same way you cleaned the large rollers inside the product.
  8. Replace the rear access door. Insert the two posts on the right of the door into the holes on the product, and then push the door in until it snaps into place.

  6. If you are printing labels, see if any are missing from the label sheet. If any labels are missing, find them inside the product, and then remove them carefully.
  7. Reattach the rear door. Gently push the door forward until it snaps into place.
Step three: Clear the paper jam from the front of the product Follow these steps to remove the paper jam from the front of the product.

  2. If you find paper jammed in the product that cannot be removed through the rear door, gently remove the paper through the front of the product.

Paper Jam message on every print job.


I have the same printer without the doc feeder. Check the paper trail thru the printer for the paper sensor lever hanging up. It gets pushed up by the paper and can stick, making the printer think it still has paper in it. Pulling the cart unsticks it till you print again.
