Question about Dyson DC07 Bagless Upright Cyclonic Vacuum

1 Answer

DC07 switching off & overheating

My DC07 has also just started to overheat and then switch off after about 5 minutes. A few people have spoke about a possible blockage, even though I keep mine clean. I am going to take it apart as much as I can and clean - I will report back if diagonis is found, if not, then I will have to take it to a proper engineer!

You can unclip the hose from the main body of the machine and you may be able to see any blockages as a result. Check your belt, beaterbar and replace your filters also. Make sure there is no blockage near the top of the machineover the small holes in the dust collection area.

Periodically my Dyson DC07 stops operating, and then will resume operating after about a 10 minute wait period. Is there a thermal switch or "cutout" if the motor is overheating?

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

Like most Dyson vacuums, DC07 is equipped with a thermostat which shuts the machine down for protection if it starts to overheat. This will often be due to a blockage, and the pre-filter may also be overdue for a wash.

The machine will reset automatically after it's been allowed to cool down, but to prevent this from happening again there are a few simple check you can try: http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc07/dc07-standard/my-machine-is-not-working/machine-won-t-switch-on-or-cuts-out/my-machine-cut-out-whilst-i-was-using-it/how-to-wash-filters/wand-suction

We recommend washing the filter at least once every 3-6 months, using cold water without detergent. Allow the filter to dry completely before replacing it - this may take at least 12 hours.

Removing any blockages and washing the filter thoroughly should resolve the issue. However, if your machine continues to shut off after you've tried both of these steps please get in touch with us directly so we can talk you through some additional troubleshooting checks. Where EXACTLY is the reset button on DC07? I am not an idiot, but I cannot find this button anywhere!

This model doesn't have a reset switch. When it shuts off due to overheating, the vacuum needs to be switched off and allowed to cool down for at least 30 minutes before using again.
Overheating is generally caused by blockages in the airflow system, and should be checked while it's shut down. A downloadable owner's manual can be found on the following site.

After using the unit for a few minutes it cuts off.

The electric motor inside your Dyson has a built in over-current trip to protect itself (and you if it seriously overheated and caught fire). This normally automatically resets itself, however if the motor has just about had it, next time it is switched on it just trips again.

The primary cause of motors overheating is that the filters are not cleaned or replaced frequently enough. Dont be fooled by Dyson's "lifetime filters". They need to be regularly cleaned and replaced when necessary.

Replacement motors are available on eBay for about £25, however replacing one requires good DIY skills and tools.

Have a look at www.dysonmedic.com and see if you feel you can tackle it yourself. If not, take it to a repair shop or call the Dyson helpline.

Motor overheats and shuts off

The priamry cause of motors overheating is that the filters are not cleaned or replaced frequently enough. Once a motor starts to overheat, it has already been damaged and even after the filters have been cleaned, may well still overheat and cut-out. The motor has a built in over-current trip to protect itself (and you if it seriously overheated). This normally automatically resets itself, however if the motor has just about had it, the moemnt it is switched on, it just trips again.

Dyson

the automatic cut out switch on the motor needs replacing when the motor gets hot this switch comes in and stops the motor from overheating when the motor cools down the cleaner will work again and cut out again when the motor gets hot if it is not replaced it will eventually burn the motor out after the switch has been replaced both the filter and cyclone need to be cleaned on a regular basis or the same will happen again

This is from the Dyson web page:
Get expert help Thermal cut out Most Dyson vacuums have a built in safety system that stops the machine if it begins to overheat. This usually happens because the filter needs washing or your machine is blocked. If your machine turns off on its own, unplug it and leave it for at least an hour to cool down. Remember to check the filter and look for blockages before re-starting.
Any non- domestic use may adversely affect the filter performance such as vacuuming up plaster dust.

Sounds like your vacuum is overheating. Check the above.

Filterqueen cuts out when warm

You should check the disc filter that is located under the paper cone support. The support is secured with a single screw in the middle at the bottom. This filter is commonly overlooked and when it gets dirty will restrict airflow and cause the motor to overheat. Most motors have a Hi-Limit switch incorporated into the motor to protect against overheating. You should also check the top filter (which is probably foam) and replace if it is clogged.
