One of the hinges is no longer holding up the screen, but other wise the display is ok. I have located the parts (ridiculous price) and the Compaq manual pdf. There is a procedure for removing the whole display unit, but nothing about replacing the hinges and internal brackets. There is no obvious way to get inside the display unit. Anyone ever cracked one of these? It's a borderline call as far as replacing the whole computer. Basically, if I can't do it myself, I might as well buy a new one. Thanks in advance.

- Found the parts at a reasonable price. When they arrive I will give replacing them a try.
-   Yeh, my v5000 has both hinges broken. Seems its a weak design! Good on ya Compaq/HP. My next laptop will not be a HP! Toshiba make the most robust laptops!

Most laptop screens come completely sealed. Fortunatly you can get it open but it is a complicated task and in most cases it is just logical to get a new lap top.
Very easy to replace if you can get new ones. Remove the batter and remove all screws under the battery as well as all the screws to the right and left of the battery location (3 on the V5000). Now back on the other side gently pry up on the portion of the "keyboard area" directly above the keyboard. A small keyboard will make this handy
Now you'll see screws holding the monitor the the notebook. Remove those screws and the monitor will be freed. Be careful with the wireless antenna wires and xvga cable. Now remove all the little rubber pads from the monitor and you'll find all the screws underneath. Remove those and you'll see how the hinges are attached to the monitor. There are three screws directly to the screen and a few to the frame on each side. Remove those and the hinges will come off.
Replacement hinges are available from HP's website for about $50 + shipping but call them up and give them *hit and see if they'll help you out.

Any device (card) that I try inserting into the pcmcia slot will freeze the Presario M2000 with XP. It did work at one time. I do not know when or why it quit. 1. Inserting a card when the laptop is on will cause it to freeze. 2. Inserting the card before resarting the laptop will keep it from restarting. The fan comes on and the screen stays black. Remove the card in this state and it will the load. 3. If I disable the Generic CardBus controller for the pcmcia before inserting the card, insertng the card has no effect. If I then enable the Generic CardBus Controller, the laptop freezes. 4. I uninstalled the Generic CardBus Controller and let the laptop reinstall it automatically upon restart. The problem remains the same. I certainly appreciate any suggestions that you may have. Rick
