Harddrive array sequence causing system in booting

One of the harddrive failed in primary server and we changed a drive taking from secondary server which worked for few hours but later system is not booting and showing msg to put the 5 harddrive in correct sequence. SERVER DETAILS HP PROLIANT ML370 G3 T03 Xeon DP 2800-512/400 .....HArddrive 36.4GB 10K ULTRA320 SCSI

If the only drive you changed was the drive that failed and all the others are in the correct sequence, then that's a good thing.

The next question is, did you have this system setup in a RAID Array and if so, what RAID configuration were you using (RAID 0,1,5, etc.)? Some RAID configurations allow you to replace a failed drive and not lose data, but I will need to know more about how you set the system up in order to help you more.

I have a Gen 8 Hp server with 5No 600GB HDD. The first two disk are mirrored, the other 5 are on raid 5. 1 of the 3 on raid 5 is flagging amber colour. How do I replace the HDD without losing Data?


Before replacing drives • Be sure that the array has a current, valid backup. • Confirm that the replacement drive is of the same type as the degraded drive (either SAS or SATA and either hard drive or solid state drive). • Use replacement drives that have a capacity equal to or larger than the capacity of the smallest drive in the array. The controller immediately fails drives that have insufficient capacity. In systems that use external data storage, be sure that the server is the first unit to be powered down and the last unit to be powered up. Taking this precaution ensures that the system does not, erroneously, mark the drives as failed when the server is powered up. Replacing drives The most common reason for replacing a drive is that it has failed. However, another reason is to gradually increase the storage capacity of the entire system. NOTE: In fault-tolerant configuration, hot-plug hard drives can be replaced when server is ON, but in case of a Non-hot-plug hard drive, it should be replaced when server is OFF. For systems that support hot-pluggable drives, if user replace a failed drive that belongs to a fault-tolerant configuration while the system power is on, all drive activity in the array pauses for 1 or 2 seconds while the new drive is initializing. When the drive is ready, data recovery to the replacement drive begins automatically. For systems that support non-hot-pluggable drives, if user replace a drive belonging to a fault-tolerant configuration while the system power is off, a POST message appears when the system is next powered up. This message prompts user to press the F1 key to start automatic data recovery. If user do not enable automatic data recovery, the logical volume remains in a ready-to-recover condition and the same POST message appears whenever the system is restarted. Automatic data recovery (rebuild) When user replace a drive in an array, the controller uses the fault-tolerance information on the remaining drives in the array to reconstruct the missing data (the data that was originally on the replaced drive) and then write the data to the replacement drive. This process is called automatic data recovery or rebuild. If fault tolerance is compromised, the controller cannot reconstruct the data, and the data is likely lost permanently. Time required for a rebuild The time required for a rebuild varies, depending on several factors: • The priority that the rebuild is given over normal I/O operations (user can change the priority setting by using HP SSA/ACU) • The amount of I/O activity during the rebuild operation • The average bandwidth capability (MBps) of the drives • The availability of drive cache • The brand, model, and age of the drives • The amount of unused capacity on the drives • For RAID 5 and RAID 6, the number of drives in the array • The strip size of the logical volume • Firmware versions of the Smart Array Controller and Hard Disk Drive • Presence of BBWC/FBWC CAUTION: Because data rebuild time may go upto the rate of 200GB/15 minutes, the system could be unprotected against drive failure for an extended period during data recovery or a drive capacity upgrade. When possible, perform rebuild operations only during periods of minimal system activity. When automatic data recovery has finished, the drive status LED changes from flashing green to solid green. If the drive status LED on the replacement drive changes to flashing or solid amber, the rebuild process has terminated abnormally. If an abnormal termination of a rebuild occurs, identify the cause and appropriate corrective steps. Abnormal termination of a rebuild If the activity LED on the replacement drive permanently ceases to be illuminated even while other drives in the array are active, the rebuild process has terminated abnormally. The following table indicates the three possible causes of abnormal termination of a rebuild. Cause 1: An uncorrectable read error has occurred. 1. Back up as much data as possible from the logical drive. CAUTION: Do not remove the drive that has the media error. Doing so causes the logical drive to fail. 2. Restore data from backup. Writing data to the location of the unreadable sector often eliminates the error. 3. Remove and reinsert the replacement drive. This action restarts the rebuild process. If the rebuild process still terminates abnormally: 1. Delete and recreate the logical drive. 2. Restore data from backup. Cause 2: The replacement drive has failed. Verify that the replacement drive is of the correct capacity and is a supported model. If these factors are not the cause of the problem, use a different drive as the replacement. Cause 3: Another drive in the array has failed. A drive that has recently failed can sometimes be made temporarily operational again by cycling the server power. 1. Power down the server. 2. Remove the replacement physical drive (the one undergoing a rebuild), and reinstall the drive that it is replacing. 3. Power up the server. If the newly failed drive seems to be operational again: 1. Back up any unsaved data. 2. Remove the drive that was originally to be replaced, and reinsert the replacement physical drive. The rebuild process automatically restarts. 3. When the rebuild process has finished, replace the newly failed drive. However, if the newly failed drive has not recovered: 1. Remove the drive that was originally to be replaced, and reinsert the replacement physical drive. 2. Replace the newly failed drive. 3. Restore data from backup. How can I transfer data between two primary hard drive after replacing one


Windows needs to be installed on the new primary hard drive and also thecomputer or laptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get afunctioning computer/laptop again.

While booting system gives message of 0 drive error also can not find disk drive


you need to press f2 from your keyboard to enter Standard CMOS Features, then highlight drive A. change it to none. May sure that you must not have anything in there unless you have floppy drive......Then configure the boot sequence, have the bios start up first ,second the cd,third the floppy disk and last the main hard drive( primary drive).If you have secondary drive than it should after the primary drive.

Boot from non Dell raid controller


Check the Boot Sequence again -- if there are any "SCSI" devices listed, enable them, and make your CD-ROM the "primary" boot-device (so that you can install Windows) and make this "SCSI" device the SECONDARY boot-device, and disable the internal hard-drive, so that it won't be used as a boot-device.

I tried the hot swap harddrive and now its having harddrive boot problems. What do i need to know about swapping out the drives?


TOOLS NEEDED
hard drive pins (located at the back of the hard drive)


be sure to pin your hard drives accordingly ,primary drive to master (ma)and secondary drive to slave (sl) if you are running 2 hard drives

or pin the hard drive to cable sellect (cs) if you are running single hard drive

if 2 hard drives running the master hard drive has to go at the end of the ribon cable and the slave hard drive goes into the slot in the middle of the ribon cable.

if you hot swap aka pulled drive wile the computer was on you might be able to do a c mos reset perhaps you are using a usb drive if you are using a usb drive you might have to go through system admin to bring your system back up by using a confirmed drive you have booted up from before.

be sure in c mos that the usb feature is enabled sometimes by defalt usb dissables.

HP DL380, drive 1 and 2 lights are not on, but 3 is. Can I swap new drives in those spots and it write automaticaly. Or is there and easy fix, I checked cables and connections, reset hardrives and powered...


Boot from HP Diagnostic Media (SmartStart CD)and check the status of Array.....or harddrives...
If showing any failed status or not supported..
Replace drives to check if new drives show status...
It could be because of Drives not intialise for Array..

Boot to Array Configuration Utility...during bootup and go to Intialise disks....

Dear friend you i think you have to operating system in to hard drive.. Please... format the IDE hard drive... if IDE hard drive is Primary hard drive then go to the BIOS, In BIOS go Boot Sequence you may see there Hard disk Priority option.. Let set Sata hard drive as first one.. Then your computer Boot from sata Harddrive... thanks...

Please do this first.. Set sata as first hard Drive from BIOS Hard disk Priority Option.. then Format IDE Hard drive..

Hey there neha patne, based on the info given, my best guess is that your boot sequence is not placing your harddrive as your primary boot device. While you are in the setup screen (via F2), locate the boot sequence line and enter. Change setting to place harddrive as primary boot device, disabling the other options and not leaving it as an auto-detect setting. Save changes and reboot. Also please ensure there are no media in the drives or unnecessary peripherals plugged in while booting up. I hope this helps. Good Luck.
