SOURCE: MAKITA LI-ION 18V BATTERIES WILL NOT CHARGE

I have had 3 battiers of the new 18v LXT go out on me. And then I had one of my drills burn up that was one of the new 18v LXT. I am stuck with the grinder, skill saw, 2 impact drivers, sawzal, flash light, and a drill. I only have one battery left and 2 chargers. That is funny. I will never buy any more Makita tools in my life.

SOURCE: I have a makita 18v impact driver that is 4 months old. I dropped it off of a 6 foot ladder today, and it stopped working. The light turns on when i pull the trigger, but a foul smell of burnt plastic

You may have damaged the brush holder, broken some tabs off that hold the field in place or knocked the armature out of alignment. All of these parts work under very close tolerances and if out of alignment will lock the motor up. If you pull the trigger the light will be able to work but since the armature can't turn, heat will build up in the motor very fast and you'll get the burning smell. You may get away with replacing the brush holder or housing but if the burning smell is actually coming from the armature, you'll have to replace that.

Get the battery tested. The light draws a very small amount of power and will work if the battery is just about dead, but to operate the drill, you need a strong battery.

Keyless chuck

You will find a screw inside the chuck that needs to come out first of all but beware that it will be a reverse thread. This is to stop it loosening whilst in use. then you will need to unscrew the chuck but it isn't easy as you have to hold the shaft that the chuck is attatched to. You can sometimes take the chuck off by holding it and pulling the trigger while in reverse. (but they can be stuck fast).
