The washer smells

My front load washer smells like mildew and now my towels all smell that way too. Is this a common probmem with front loads? Or just the GE. It is terrible.

I have had the same problem for a while now and GE won't do anything ablout it. I have had 2 other repairmen come out and they say it is poor design and that the door area holds water. I am waiting on a GE repairman to come and see what he says, but I refuse to buy another or pay for additional parts to correct it. I have also contacted an attorney who deals with consumer products to see if there is a case against GE (it sounds like many front loaders have the same issue though).

I have tried everything............different detergents, fabric softeners, etc. I am spending more money on rewashing clothes and three times more on bounce, fabric softeners and still the laundry smells soured. I can smell it on my husbands clothing so I know others can smell it on mine. I certainly can't afford to purchase a new one that may result in the same problems.

I'm having the same problem! I noticed that the smell started after the "plug" that they don't tell you about became clogged, so I thought the standing water may have been the culprit. However, we have cleared that and the smell still hasn't gone away. I find that if I get my clothes out as soon as the washer stops, it is not as bad... but still there!! Please help!!

I purchased my front load washer in June and have the same smelly problem.  I have tried to clean the front rubber with a little bleach but it didn't help at all.  I have found that you cannot leave the clothes in the washer for longer than a few hours or they have to be rewashed.  Some of my towels have retained the odor and I had to get rid of them.  I don't believe that we are the only people with this problem and I plan on trying to get some answers from the appliance store where Ipurchased them.

My new GE front load washer started smelling of mildew as soon as I started using it. I thought the problem was something in my plumbing etc. & tried to make sure everything was clean & clear. It's draining completely. Tried running thru cycles with bleach but that didn't help the odor, its so bad it almost knocks you down when you open the door. This seems to be a common problem with front loaders & I didn't realize it until I looked on the net. Please advise for a solution, I have mine elevated & love it because I'm short but would return it in a minute due to the odor.

I Talked with a retail appliance sale's person about two weeks ago because I had the same problem. Buy a can of country time lemonaide and put three scoops into the drum and run it through a regular wash cycle. This removes the odor. Also around the rubber door seal you can pull the rubber back from the drum side and wipe around the seal with lemon juice due to water and detergent being trapped in the seal. Once every month should do the job. It works for me.

Mildew smell

All front loaders have to be run thru a clean cycle with no clothes or soap atleast Twice a month. You can use bleach or buy one of the special cleaners they have for washers.

Awful smell! I drain it every cycle, I use the washer cleaner, everything! I am so sick of my towels smelling awful.

Sounds like the little flexible apron just in front of your washer drum has mildewed. Take a look and see if it is holding water, and look for mold while your'e at it. Use a good bathroom mold and mildew remover to kill the mess and deodorize it.

Odor problems with whirlpool front load washer

Is the smell of mildew?

Run the washer on empty with beach and soap.

This is a common problem when the front door is left closed after use.

When the washer is not in use leave the front door cracked open. This will help in preventing mold & mildew.

Smell of mildew on our towel and sheets

This is probably happening because the clothing is being left damp in the washer. When it is warm during the summertime mildew will grow very quickly in the towels. On front load washers you need to leave the door open when not in use to keep mildew from growing. You should wipe out behind the inner seal any moisture when you are done doing laundry. This is an issue for most front loaders. Some front loaders have a clean washer cycle that uses bleach to sanitize the drum. Other washers like the Samsung have a block of silver and release silver ions in the wash to sanitze the clothes.

Mildew smell on cloths

The brand of your front loader is not that material on this issue. What is happening is that your old top load washer may have used as much as 45 gallons of water per cycle, while some front loaders use as little as 12. Because of the low water use, you must cut back on the additives you are using. Use only 1 tablespoon of HE detergent (even less if 2x or 3x detergent) per load. If you use fabric softener, use only 1 teaspoon per load. Odor on clothes after wash is indicating that the detergent and or softener has not been fully rinsed out. If you throw a load of washed towels into your machine and start a cycle without any soap, then stop the cycle, you should not see any suds. If you do, there is obviously soap left in the clothes. With bath towels, the towels are used to absorb clean water off a clean body. They do not need soap when you wash them, and never use fabric softener on towels.
If your washer is a LG WM-1832 it has a assessable filter behind the access door on the lower left front of the machine. Clean that out first, and if it has a tub clean or sanitary cycle use that cycle (if not, use hottest longest cycle available) with 3 Affresh tablets or use whirlaway to clean out the washer outer tub (the not visible tub that holds the water). You might want to use another cycle like that with bleach to head off mold or mildew growth. Use of proper amount of detergent and fabric softener should really help the clothes odor issue from then on. Also check the tub seal at the bottom of the door area to clean out any lint from drain hole areas to help prevent water from remaining in the tub seal area.

Clothes/towels smell like mildew

Front load washers are so tight ( to seal in water ) that they tend to leave water in door gaskets and other places.. This water gets stagnant and can build up mildew etc..Home depot and other home goods stores sells a product called AFRESH and you use it about once a month ( with no clothes in washer).. It does help a bit..
Other techniques you can try would be to wipe down the gasket around the door opening after a wash is complete and to leave the door open between washes to let it air dry.. You should be using HE type laundry detergent and very little of it ( sveral drops is enough per load)..

hope that helps you...

Smely Clean Clothes

We had a similiar problem. It was mildew in the washer and in the fabrics. We ran two or three empty loads with some bleach added in, and we leave the door open so the drum dries.
The towels and clothes we hung out in bright sunlight. The UV rays kill the mildew.

Mildew smelling towels and no separate rinse cycle

the problem is your door seal if you close the door after a wash then what happens is the water goes mouldy on the inside of the door seal what you need to do is replace the door seal you will never get rid of the smell without replacing it never close the door after a wash always leave it open to make sure its your seal the easy way is to look at the inner part of the seal and it will be mouldy only thing you can do
