SOURCE: Dropped my portable WD Passport, now Windows

Suggest you remove the harddrive inside the case of the WD Passport, and install it in an inexpensive external enclosure.

However if the harddrive was on, and in use when dropped, you need not bother.

Inside that plastic case of the WD Passport, is a regular harddrive. There is also a small circuit board.
Interface Board.
The harddrive connects to the small circuit board directly, or there are cables (Wires) that come from the circuit board, and connect to the harddrive.

This Interface Board is damaged very easily.

Harddrives are measured by their Width. How wide across is it.
A laptop size harddrive is 2.5 inches across in width. (6.4cm)
A desktop harddrive is 3.5 inches across in width. (8.9cm)

There are two styles usually used in an external harddrive.
IDE (PATA) and SATA.

The harddrive in the WD Passport 250GB external harddrive is a 2.5 SATA harddrive.

This is an example of a 2.5 SATA external enclosure,

Why do I state forget about repairing if the WD Passport was on when dropped?
The resulting internal damage.

Bear with me, I'll try to make this short;

A) Inside the case of a harddrive as used in the WD Passport, are Platters.
These resemble a CD or DVD disk.
Usually made of metal, or glass.

The top surface, and bottom surface is coated with a magnetic medium.
(Ferrous substance)
There are usually 3 to 6 Platters.

B) There is a Read/Write Head for the Top, and Bottom of every Platter inside the harddrive.
One on top, one on bottom.

The names imply just what the portion of the Read/Write Head does.
The Read portion reads whats on the Platter. The Write portion writes to the Platter
(When writing the magnetic medium is arranged. Arranged in 0's and 1's.
1 being ON, 0 being OFF. This is changed into computer language)

C) There is an Actuator Arm for every Platter. Holds the top Read/Write Head, and the bottom Read/Write Head.

The Actuator Arms are moved back, and forth across the Platters.
The Actuator Motor moves them.
(When the harddrive is operating, the arms can move back, and forth across the Platters, at
Hundreds of Times a Second)

D) There is a Spindle Motor that spins a Spindle. The Spindle goes up through the center of the Platters.

The Read/Write Heads are parked away from the Platters when the harddrive is not activated.
When activated the Read/Write Heads have a VERY close proximity to the surface of the Platters.

If memory serves it's around .0003
Three ten-thousandths of an inch.
An average human hair is .003
Three thousandths of an inch.

With the close proximity of the Read/Write Heads to the Platters, and the extremely fast movement, the Read/Write Heads actually float on a cushion of air.

http://computer.howstuffworks.com/hard-disk.htm

If dropped while activated, the Read/Write Heads will crash into the Platters.
Retrieving information, would require a professional data retrieval shop to remove each Platter, and install them one at a time in a harddrive setup they have.

As much information is retrieved as possible.
Once a harddrive is opened up, it is doomed. A harddrive is built in a Clean Room.
A room that is 99.9 percent dust free. The tech's wear a suit, and have to walk through a corridor with air jets, before they can enter the Clean Room.

SOURCE: my computor switches off the moment i plug in the wd passport.

Probably a power issue. Your new computer has less extra power capacity and the external drive is pulling from the USB port power.

What you need is a USB hub with an AC adapter that powers the hub and any devices that are connected to it from the external AC power adapter and NOT from the USB bus. In other words look for an external power adapter that plugs into the wall as well as into the USB port. Don't get a recharger for an iPOD as that will not do you any good. And don't get a hub that says "powered" or "external power" that does not have an AC power adapter because it is still sucking power off of the USB port.

Try shopping for a D-Link DUB-H4 High Speed USB 2.0 4-Port Hub. It is a good choice if you are not going to plug any USB 1.1 devices into it. Read the reviews for any device you choose.

SOURCE: I have hundreds of pics on my WD passport and it won't open I don't want to lose my pics.

can you see your wd passport

Windows 7

First, please disconnect all USB devices and then perform the following steps:

Click "Start" button, type "devmgmt.msc" (without quotation marks) in the "Search" bar and press "Enter". Click "Continue" if necessary.

In Device Manager, double click to expand "Universal Serial Bus controllers", right click on the Host Controller, click "Uninstall" and click "OK".

Repeat the step 2 to uninstall all items under "Universal Serial Bus controllers".

Then, restart your computer and Windows 7 will reinstall all USB controllers automatically.

If the hard drive that has failed is the same one that you are trying to recover from might the reason that you are getting this error.

This could be an issue where the part of the hard drive you are trying to access is corrupt and not accessible which would explain the reason that it would let you access the other partition.

Now I have seen cases where Malware can break the link of a Hard Drive.

So let's try a couple of steps.

Let's go back in to "Disk Management"

Lets right click on the partition that you are not able to access and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths"

Now try selecting a new Drive Letter.

This will restore the path if it has been broken.

There are also Data Recovery programs that might be very helpful to recover your important information.

hope this helps

My wd hdd fell from my desk, and a few minutes after it dropped i tried it on my compaq laptop and it worked after restarting the laptop, i tried accessing my wd hdd and it gave an error message saying...

WD offers a recovery service, unfortunately that is going to be your cheapest option and that is a long shot and expensive. What happened is the Disk Read/Write arms are no longer in alignment from the impact or have broken free. Because of the need for a clean room environment to work on a HD it is very costly to get these repaired and well out of range for most everyday users.

Something mechanically has gone wrong with the disk-drive inside the enclosure.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service".
They can disassemble the enclosure, disassemble the disk-drive, and fix it just long-enough to copy your files (onto another disk or onto blank DVD-writable media). Not "inexpensive".

Then, you can use WD's "Customer Loyalty Program", i.e., prove that you previously purchased a WD product, and you'll get a discount on buying another WD product, if you purchase through their web-site (and pay for shipping).

Can I use my passport essential 2.0 to backup my work computer as well as my home computer?

You can use your WD Passport to sychronize data on multiple computers, you just need to set up the other computer name (e.g. "Work computer")using the software.

WARNING: Do not think that theyourWD Passport, using the WD Sync software, is a
backup drive; it is NOT !

As per the documentation with this device:
"synchronization software is intended to synchronize the data from a
computer to the drive (WD Passport) and SHOULD NOT be used as backup
software. To use this software properly, we advise that you do not wipe or
erase the data from the internal hard drive (computer) and resynchronize, as
this will cause the data that WD Sync stored to the Passport to be deleted."

This is why you are hearing so many people saying that they are deleting the
WD Sync software, reformatting, and using the WC Passport as a true backup
drive where you can actually see the files that you are backing up, rather
than a bunch of unrecognizable sync files that likely don't have all the files that you thought you "backed up".
