I turned by front element to low and it went bright red, as hot as if it were on high

Same here, not sure of the cause, though my wife likes to turn the burner on high going the wrong way past off, instead of through the numbers. Does this hurt the contacts in the rheostat?

I also have the same problem, though also the surface of the element started to flake off as it cooled down - does it have to be replaced?

I have also had the same problem, but also as it cools the surface has started flaking off. Does it need to be replaced? What is the surface made of?

The element only does what it's told. more than likely the contacts in the switch are stuck. the switch needs to be replaced.

GE electric stove problems, our stove has 3 small burners and one big burner. When we use the big burner at medium heat it does fine then all of a sudden it starts glowing bright red and burns whatever is...

Replace the infinite heat control switch for that burner. (the burner switch that you turn with the knob to select the temp setting) If you list a full model number (usually behind the lower drawer panel on the frame of the range) I can look up the part number for you. It is not a very difficult repair.

Stove top burners and lower baking element not heating up

If all the elements are dead, check for blown fuses/tripped circuit breakers. There may be some in the range unit itself in addition to your electrical service panel. If one element is completely dead on all heat settings, the control is probably bad or there is a broken wire. If it is stuck on high for all control settings or is erratic, the control is bad - replacements are readily available and easily installed.
On ranges with push button heat selection, a pair of heating elements are switched in various combinations across 120 and/or 240. If some heat settings do not work, the most likely cause is that one of the heatings elements is burnt out although a bad switch is also possible. Kill power to the range and test the heating elements for continuity with resistance meter or multimeter.

For the lower baking element:
Again, check for blown fuses in the oven or tripped circuit breakers. The remove any wiring to the bottom element and test for resistance. If you get no reading (or a very high resistance) then your element is dead.

Ge true temp stove top burner wont stay on

dont know how old unit is or how familiar you arewiththe unit, but the burner will need to heat up and cycle off/on. no matter how high or low you set the setting it will heat to a specific temp and cycle off, if hte burner remained RED all the time the glass would crak( so dont go by appearnce of burner, the glass should dictate the temp

The swich for the burner is bad and needs to be replaced. The glass will be fine, but unless your just boiling water you wont be abe to use it until you replace the switch.
