How do I wire a single light to a on/off switch

Add a comment and say what wires you have in case following answer misses your mark.

As a general rule, there is one cable that comes from breaker box.
There is another cable that goes to light fixture.
Each cable has 1 Black, 1 White and 1 Bare ground.

So you have 2 Blacks, 2 Whites and 2 Grounds.
White wires twist together and are covered by wire nut.
Black wires each connect to a different brass-colored screw on light switch. In any order.
Bare ground wires connect to green screw.

If light fixture has wires, then black goes to black and white to white, and ground to ground.
If light fixture has screws, then black goes to brass screw, white to silver screw, and ground to green screw.

Old Victorian Light fixture needs to be repaired. I think soldering the broken parts together would work, but I've never soldered brass parts (only simple electronic motherboards). Anyone out there that...

to solder brass u just use regular solid solder with a tin of acid flux, but u must use a Small butane fueled pin torch or a large high temperature solder iron to do the heating (this really depends on the size of the material being soldered), the brass must be clean and bright, use steel wool for this these small torches are available from any hardware store, they fuel up with butane cartridges used for refilling cigarette lighters

How to wire so switch controls outlet? We hooked it up. The switch controls the light fixture but no power is going to the outlet.

You should run a short "jumper" wire from the same screw that the light fixture's wire is on to the brass screw at the outlet. If you put the jumper on the OTHER side of the switch, the outlet will be always on.

I have a hampton bay ceiling fan & light, carriage house 52", white. the light fixture is loose, it feels like it is ready to fall. is there any way of thghting so it will not fall

Depending on where it's loose it would be tightened with the nut on the shaft/pipe going into the bottom of the fan or, tightening the screws which fasten the housing to the light fixture is -- these will be in the side of the lower cup which connects to the fan housing.
