Question about APC Back-UPS CS 500VA UPS System

Dead appearing ups/inverter

My offline 500 VA home inverter (electric power generator-MOSFET based) does not show any (mains ) light indicator even when main supply is on. when switched to battery(mains off) it does no show battery indicator on . the ouput point of ups show 2 v AC on multimeter when mains supply is on . All fuses are ok. the ups appears dead as if just passing mains suplply. no sound from its transformer & no normal heating up signs etc.earlier the external battery connected to it had become defective and inverter used to jump btn main and battery option when switch buttons for both were 'on'(main supply present) and low battery indication when only battery switch is on(main supply of either kept off or no supply). pl help troubleshoot the problem.

    My inverter was working fine however there was
    lighting stuck the electric pole since than
    its not charging the battery however its switching from mains to battery and battery to mains but not charging the battery . When lighting stuck the electric pole there was sound near my inverter as if something blew
    i opened my inverter and checked i did not find any circuit plate burned or damaged
    iam not able to understand why its not charging the battery ?

Keep on your main switch. off all the lights fan and other electrical items, let that inverter get charge first

Hi every one ... I have a UPS with 12V 7A battery .. i want to replace the battey with 12V 100AH battery with an external charger. The problem is i don't know how to cut out the built-in UPS charger?


Two issues must be noted in this case.
First of all working the UPS continuously on the battery for more than the stipulated time of the design could generate problems especially if the heat sinks for the MOSFETS are insufficient. Secondly the charging circuit is designed along with the drain circuit and so you need to get the battery charged externally in parallel with a proper cut off circuit.
My suggestion to you is that Instead of this modification, it is better to get an UPS/Inverter of 500 VA which will easily work on the 1000AH battery, new designs are compact and efficient. You keep aside this short period UPS for a specific purpose or even connect this to the main UPS/Inverter.

you should check the inverter and the charger boards as well.
Mainly IGBTs and drivers (IGBT drivers).
better locate the fault and replace the defective board

My inverter (500 va) (battery based electric generator for power backup) keeps on charging batteries even when the charging light goes off making the inverter, wires and battery very hot.


This a possible failure of the voltage detection circuit in the inverter main board and requires the fault be identified by checking the voltage/current feed/limiter to the battery.
Once when the battery voltage has reached the threshold set up the charging should stop and then the circuit will analyse the voltage on the board to trigger the charging to be put ON.
This can be a failure of the detection circuit and if not checked can damage the battery.

DO NOT DO THIS! If I understand you correctly you want to have three ways to have 110 power in your motor home--- (1)Vehicle 12V to inverter to main panel. (2)Generator to main panel. (3)plug the main panel into 110V. If any two of these are connected at the same time and they are both live, somethings going to blow. That's because with AC, the two sources must be synchronized in their cycles very precisely. The utility company connects their power plants together on the grid only with the aid of precise controls. But the really serious problem is the same reason they invented transfers switches for home generators -- if you were connected to (3) and the power went out, and you connected (1) or (2) without disconnecting the dead (3), you will backfeed power to the line outside and you just might kill the lineman who is trying to fix the power outage.

Batteries in the UPS typically last 3 to 5 years and it depends upon several factors. including the number of times the unit must go on battery power and environmental conditions. There are usually several batteries in the UPS and while the battery voltage may show 13 volts, this may only be a float charge/voltage and a true indication of the battery voltage and condition requires the batteries to be tested under a load. There maybe one battery in a set of batteries that is faulty and causes the whole battery system to fail and indicate a battery fault.

These lower powered and cheaper KVA type UPS are switch over types, when the mains supply fail, the UPS switches over to the inverter in milli-seconds which then supplies mains power but the power waveform is a pseudo sine wave (ie not a true sinewave. A faulty inverter circuit won’t deliver power when the mains supply fails.

The true UPS types are usually the higher KVA units (over 1500 VA) that supplies uninterrupted mains power. The mains power is connected to a charger which charges the batteries and the inverter draws power from these batteries and converts it to true sine wave mains power therefore there is no switch over time lag from the mains to the battery.

I am thinking this a high impediance device problem and this is normal operation - the user manual of my inverter warns about use with high impediance devices - if not I am interested also...
