froggy, First check the back panel of the freezer section and see if you have a big frost build up. If so, you probably have a defrost problem, heaters more than likely. If there is no frost build-up check to see if the fan in the freezer (evaporator fan) is running. If that's ok, next would be the automatic damper. Have someone unplug the refer. Open the refer door and listen for the damper door to open when someone plugs the refer back in. If thats operational, next would be the thermistors, you would have to ohm them out to see if they are in range. Seldom is this the problem. Check these things out and get back on what you find. SOURCE: refrigerator not cooling

see if the compressor motor is running

The compressor is a football-sized case with no apparent moving parts. It's on the outside of the refrigerator at the back near the bottom. If it is humming or making a continuous noise and your refrigerator is still not cooling, there may be a more serious problem with one or more of several different components, we recommend contacting a qualified appliance repair technician for further help.

If the compressor is not running but you do have power to the refrigerator, there may be a problem with one or more of these:

  • The compressor

  • The Thermostat

  • The overload, relay, or capacitor

  • The defrost timer

  • The condenser fan motor

SOURCE: GE GSH25JSTA SS side by side fridge not cooling/freezing

In most cases it is the Defrost timer circuit. One of three things the Defrost time (most likely) it allows the cooling for a 6 to 10 hour period and the defrosting for 10 to 30 minutes to remove ice buildup, ICE BUILDUP is the main problem as it restrict air flow, the cooling air circulation through the system. You see cool air only comes in the freezer side and passes through vents (pass ways) to the refrigerator side. Ice buildup in the freezer side inhibits cooling air to the refrigerator side. You think the freezer is working, but it is only cooler because there is ice in there that you can't see. The Terminator (a LIMIT switch) opens the defrost circuit if the defrost heater gets too hot (second likely) the next is the Heater which heats for those 10 to 30 minutes to melt the ice buildup (least likely) no matter the Unit you have they all have this circuit... Hope this helps, I'm Tango

SOURCE: freezer cool fridge not

Hi, With the information you supplied i'm going to assume there is an ice build up at the rear of the freezer. Your problem is going to be with your defrost system. I will also assume you have the ability to repair this yourself. This is going to be one of three problems with your refridgerator, 1st thing to do is remove shelfs and panel in the back of the freezer...you should see ice build up on the evaporator...don't worry get a hair dryer and melt the ice. Next locate the wires for the heater...using a multi meter test the heater for condinuity...if the heater is bad replace it, If the heater is good replace the defrost thermostat..the stat normally is a barrel looking part clipped onto the evaporator pipe. The last possible problem could be the evaporator fan, have you heard the fan running in the past few hours?..if you are not sure pull the panel out to where you can see fan and watch it over an hour to see if it turns. I have included links with pictures of what the parts you need to check are: http://romulusappliance.com/manufacturers/maytag/refrigerators/575432.JPG defrost stat http://www.hotekalliance.com/UploadFiles/2008627111553382.jpg heaters http://www.applianceblog.com/archives/EvapMotor1018185.jpg evap fan. Hope this helps. If you have any other questions please feel free to comment again. If you decide to get a repair guy in should not cost you any more then $120 - $200 depending on make/model/problem Good luck! P.s Please don't forget to rate my solution Thanks! Mike

It sounds like the main control board is bad . After looking up the board , it is on a recall lisr by GE . You should call GE and have them come and check it .

Power surge brand new maytag fridge not cooling

That power surge probably burnt out the guse on the circuit board. I suspect you may need a new board unless you know an electricity geek who can replace the fuse. New I would check your warranty. That circuit board might cost $200. plus..

Power returned after storm. sub zero works but not ice maker. what to do?

Please shut down the fridge for about 6 hours, restart and then check if there is cooling . It is possible that the power outage could have reset the settings and so by resetting to normal condition it must work .

What would cause a 2 day old fridge to shift into the "cooling OFF" mode? We found the reset command purely by luck tonight. Is there any way to switch this mode permanently off?

A power outage. If no power outage you may of had a power surge and with this model it will kick itself to the off position to help protect the unit from anymore damage.

Refrigerator won't restart after power outage.

Check all of your breakers first (if you have light, it's getting power) but if you had low AC line voltage for any length of time, the compressor may be fried.
If that proves to be the case, call your electric utility and ask them about their liability; if they have allowed a 'brown-out' to persist, it is their fault. This happened to us on a fairly new fridge and they coughed up $350 for the repair.

Refrigerator will not chill after power outage, frost on freezer

Please check other question on this subject, but long story short is that the unit needs to be completly defrosted, your freezer is what cools your fridge and if there is ice build up on the evaporator air cannot flow through to the fridge.
