Question about Toshiba 50H81 50" Rear Projection Television
I have a Toshiba Model 50H81 that is about 7 years old. Today is the first day I've had a problem. I was monitoring a video tape that I was recording when the picture went blank and the red power light on the front of the set started flashing on and off. Repeated attempts to unplug and plug the set in, then power the set up, both manually by pushing the POWER button and by using the remote, failed.
It is very likely that one of the convergence correction chips has gone south on you (either that or a capacitor). What you want to look for is a swollen capacitor , or a burnt resistor near the two large heatsinks on the signal/convergence PCB. The flashing LED is an indication that the power supply has detected a fault, your mission is to determine what that might be. another thing to check out at the fuses on the power supply PCB (these have labels like FXXX were XXX is a number). If you find an open fuse, that will help determine where to look for the fault.

I believe the set you're talking about is a rear-projection TV. Those have bulbs inside that eventually fail and need to be replaced. The color of the lights, and the way it flashes (long flashes, short flashes, etc.) are usually like a morse-code that signals the type of malfunction. If you still have your TV manual, it should have a troubleshooting section that will describe the various blinking light patterns and what they represent.
But my guess is that you need to replace one or more bulbs.
