Question about Computers & Internet

The cooling fan is not coming on on my sony vaio laptop and i need to turn it on manually. How do I turn it on and what would cause it to not come on automatically?

I have a Sony Vaio laptop. Took it yesterday to the computer repair shop and was told it is in good shape no viruses or malware. Today it popped up a window that said to backup the computer and call customer care because the c: drive/ hard drive was failing and that I need to have it replaced or repaired. Now the fan is not coming on when it overheats. I just need to know how to turn the fan on manually. I know I should know how to do this and I do most of the time, but cant for the life of me remember how to do this right now as simple as it may seem. Help,Thanks.

One time cooling fan caused sony laptop to black out. right now, changing desktop picture caused cooling fan to start heating up. shut down some opened programs and it is all right. what is the problem?...

When the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermaloverload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is theproblem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are cloggedwith dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make surethe vents are clear and dust free. Use a can of compressed air to do this.

My sony vaio shuts down quite frequently ...it started after i got repaired for a monitor problem from vaio service centre..they replaced the mother board it seems....does it have anything to do with that?

This could be a sign that your laptop is overheating. If you touch the laptop while it is running & you find it too hot, make sure that the fan is running properly & that the air ways are not blocked.
You can blow compressed air into the cooling vents of the fan. If you notice clouds of dust coming out, then it might be a good idea to disassemble the laptop, clean the fan & air ways, & reassemble it back. If the fan has failed & is no longer running, it might need to be replaced.

If none of this solves the problem, or is not the case, then you might have a bad motherboard.

My sony VAIO laptop keeps making a clicking, rattling like sound and i want to kow how to stop it. It started happening because i left my laptop on a couch for an extended period of time. I read in forums...

sounds like the fan in your laptop is failing or is damaged, when you run graphic intensive applications and the fan turns on is that then you hear the noise if so it is your fan and you should see about getting it replaced because the components in your laptop will over heat and stop working.

Sony Vaio laptop Auto Switch Off problem

A laptop switching off automatically is an 80% chance that it happened because it overheated. To avoid damage computers turn off immediately, very high temperatures can cause fire or smoke.

I suspect that the ventilation fans of your laptop have either stopped working or have caught up too much dust to work properly. Do you use your it on a carpet or a bed? If yes then you are blocking the ventilation so there is no way your PC will cool itself.

First, check if your PC starts making a lot of noise a while after you turn it on. Put your hands on the vents and check if you feel air blowing out. You should feel warm air coming out. If the air speed feels weak, most probably you will have to get the fans clean; a lot of dust has gone in. If you dont feel any air at all or a very weak flow the fans might have broken and need to be replaced.

Check out this video for info:

Finally, I highly recommend you use a laptop cooling pad. There is a huge variety of those in the market. Depending on where the vents are located there are different types of coolers. I personally use a Antec Laptop Cooler. It helps keep my laptop cool specially when I am gaming. Of course you can for another one of your choice but thats a headstart. Let me know if you need more help.

My vaio vgn-cs320j makes a loud spinning noise that comes and goes every few seconds or minutes. Is it the fan not working properly or some other issue, or is that just what the fan sounds like? if it is...

Usually Sound from Notebook are from CPU cooling fan and from Hard drive.

But It's hardly occur in the case of Hard drive.we called it Hard drive failure and the only solution for this is new replacement.

Your problem could be CPU cooling fan not working properly. Open the Notebook ( it will be easy if you refer to manual on how to open) and start the system now, you will be able to pinpoint what causes the sound.

Clean the CPU cooling fan with an air blower and re-check if the problem still persists.

If OK,then close the Notebook otherwise replace the CPU Cooling fan with a new one.

My Sony Vaio laptop makes a lot of noise mostly it seems from the fan. This is intermittent but seems to happen when I have had the laptop on for a long time. What might be causing this and is this serious...

Your processor is probably getting too hot. When it gets hot, the fan speed will increase. You will heed to have the processor heat sink checked, cleaned, and new thermal paste applied to it. You will also need to clean your cooling fans if they are dirty.
