Use NIMH batt. NIMH gives you 1.2 power good for camera
ALCALINE & NICD gives 1.5 v which is bad and will discharge soon.
so use NIMH 2500 / 3200

Camera comes on then right back off new batteries

I had this problem with a Canon that was about 4 years old. After some hunting, I found out that a main control in the camera was broken or worn out. The cost to repair was more than a new camera. Before you give up on it tough, try a new card. I have read that an old or corrupted card will cause cameras to act screwy.

When I turn my brand new camera on the lens goes in and out and then shuts off.

Assuming the batteries are fully charged, as its a new camera take it back to the vendor and request a demonstration to your satisfaction or a replacment under warranty.

Camera immediate shuts off after turning it on

try using lithium or nimh rechargeable batteries. I had the same problem and switched out the batteries and put in eveready nimh batteries and it works fine now. Guess the old cheap ones weren't doing the job. And they were brand new batteries.

When turned on, lens goes out then right back in, eventually camera shuts off. view mode OK.

This might be an E18 lens error issue. Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. Have already fixed several cameras with this problem by using these methods:
