Reset at&t 1720 answering machine after power failure

Is it an older machine (with tape) or a newer machine (with digital recording)? If it's a tape machine, flip the tape over & try again. If it still doesn't work, it may be time to give it up.

If it's a newer machine, and you've recently had a power failure, it may have gotten confused when the power came back. It happens. Try unplugging it (from the power outlet), waiting 15 seconds, and plugging it back in.

Does it have a button somewhere that turns answering on & off? Look it over carefully, read the manual. It may simply be set to "do not answer". They have that functionality because some of us use two or more answering machines to screen our calls - one in each room where we MIGHT get calls. Only one is ever set to "answer", but they can all announce the call. Some folks use a second or third answering machine / phone combo as an ordinary phone, too... again keeping only the primary machine as their active "answering" machine.

You need to reset it all unfortunately as if you have a new phone. That is the bad thing about power failures.

Run a backup before the HD fails...quickest way to save all personal info.

i have the same problem. put a new HDD and still shows the same message.

Your hard drive is not in a good condition. You need to backup all data on that hard drive & replace it with a new one as soon as possible.

PF is power failure. Your home has experienced a power failure since the last use.

Unplug it for 40 minutes to reset.

Power Failure Recovery

If the system is disconnected from the AC power it will not operate. Your announcemen and messages are retained in memory during a power failure but you will need to reset the clock. See the instructions on the bottom of the unit. If the message window displays CL, you need to reset the clock. See the instruction on the bottom of the unit.

The answering machine is supposed to save messages during a power failure. If the messages are gone, then the unit is defective.
