Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Drive shows 56GB used in properties, but my computer registers only 3 folders totalling 6GB. I had a fourth folder of around 50GB that it used to show, but no longer shows. The space used suggests its still there, but I cant get it to register to enable me to access it.

Hi. I checked show hidden folders and removed the check from hide system folders. This revealed a system folder FOUND.OOO containing about 10 GB of file fragments (Filennn.CHK) which the system warned me off opening. No luck with the missing folder though - still leaves 40GB undisplayed.

Is there anything else I can try? Or do I need to take the drive to a data recovery service?

The 10 GB of CHK file fragments lists 9,999 files (ie File0001.CHK to File9999.CHK. Could these be the last remains of my missing folder? If so, should I try to open them (& if so, with what program?). Thanks.

Hey there, computers are always fun. Lets see if the folder is hidden first. open an explorer window, my computer will work. Click tool, folder options, view then make sure the circle for show hidden folders is filled in. click apply then check again. Just ok any window that may popup warning you about system files. Let me know how you make out.

This is a weird one, you may want to run a diagnostic tool on this drive when you are done. But first, you should try to recover your files. Go to the following link and download the free version of recuva. This will find all the files on that drive, even ones that have been deleted for any reason. Good luck

Several things could be happening.
1. the hard drive direct drive motor is giving out.
2. the hard drive is full.
3. the hard drive needs to be optimized ( that is defragmented) using the Windows defragment utility. If the drive is large it will take some time to complete.

Hi,
It is due to virus activity. Some virus make the contents of the drive hidden, thats why user can't see the files. This can be fixed and data would be available to you. However, there are number of steps involved.
It is suggested that go to FOLDER OPTIONS - and select 'SHOW HIDDEN FILES & FOLDERS' and uncheck/ Deselect 'HIDE PROTECTED SYSTEM FILES'.
creativetech_53.jpg
It would show the hidden files/ folders, if the system not infected Otherwise, from the clean/ virus free system you can see your data and copy all the required files/data. Select the required files and right-click and change the properties of the file by un-checking the hidden attribute. Please note that you can not change the properties (hidden attribute of the files) if the files are marked as system files. To change the attribute of such folders you can download and use iReset.

Also, make sure that you have a good antivirus installed and its updated. Scan your system and clean it.

Let me know if any further clarification/ assistance is required.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

if you have downloaded any form of media (audio, video or photos) check your incomplete folder and delete..delete part (keep up to 2-3 months ago) of the cookies that a laptop/pc tend to just keep and it builds up...then search for hidden folders by going to my computer/tools/folder option/view/click on show hidden files and okay..........open each hidden file and delete what you might have deleted already (be xtra xtra extra careful not to delete any microsoft windows needed files).when finished click back on the hidden button to hide folders again

How many files are on the drive? Are they in folders? The FAT formatting normally used for these drives limits the total number of files unless the files are in folders. I think the value is ~500 items - this is due to the minimum bytes to store each file. (If the files are in folders you can stack 500 items in 500 folders.)

One thing to try is to move the files to your computer, and then return them to the flash drive. (Formatting the drive after the files are safely on your computer is an option.)

Good luck.

Updated Tom Tom One Edition 3 and no have no maps and told there is not enough room to download from computer back up; tried to delete from device but still not enough room

There is this problem with TomTom. Tom do not seem to overwrite the existing map file. So before trying to install the map, you need to delete the folder that contains the map. Once you have connected your TomTom to the computer, close the TomTom home window. Double click on my computer. You will see the TomTom hard drive as a drive (like you see the CD drive). Double click on that . Once the folders of the TomTom hard drive opens, look for a folder named USA_Canada_and_Mexico_P. (Please note: this name is for American continent. For others, this name will be different) Right click on it. click properties. Check whether the size of this folder is approximately around 1.3 GB to 1.5 GB. This is just to make sure we have the correct folder. After confirming this is the map folder, copy this folder to your computer for back up purpose. Once you have it safely in your computer, delete this folder from the TomTom hardrive. Go back to TomTom home software. Use the map guarantee to update/Upgrade the new map. You will see this time around the installation completes without a problem.

What ever i push in the main menu, it says file sys err

It sounds like something has become corrupted in the main files. If you have all your photos, music and videos STILL on your computer - YOU DID SOMETHING RIGHT!

STEP ONE:

In order to not loose the Coby MANAGER FOLDER

1. Go into "My Computer" Coby will show up under "Removable Drive/ Storage"
2. Double Click the icon to open the Coby player.
3. Save ALL the system folders to a folder you create on your desktop.
(You might want to save everything including your music, movies and photos also! That makes it easier to restore them later.)
A. Right Click and Hold the Mouse on each folder -
B. Drag to the desktop folder you created
C. Release the mouse button
D. Select "COPY HERE" on the pop-up screen
E. Double check that your properties for the desktop folder is the same size, # of folders and # of files - as the ones on the player.
1. Go to EDIT /Select ALL in folder
2. Go to FILE /Properties
3. Choose "Properties"

If the same size, # of folders, # of files are both on your computer and in the player, Close out all opened folders (that you're using to view the contents of the player)
F. Disconnect the player from the computer using the Coby Manager or Safely Remove Hardware.

STEP TWO:

1. Go into Coby Manager the program is still on your computer unless you've changed computers or computer drives. (See Below STEP THREE)
2. Go to Device Tab
3. Make sure the Coby Player is TURNED OFF ! ! !
3. Attach player to Computer
4. It will show up in the Device Tab of Coby Manager
5. In the lower right hand corner you will see a button "FORMAT"
a. Take a deep breath, gently click on format, squeeze eyes tightly shut... Pray LOUDLY NO WAIT!!! That's not right... I digress...
a. Click on FORMAT
b. Let the program re-format the drive -

THIS WILL MAKE YOU LOOSE
ALL INFORMATION ON THE PLAYER ! ! !

That's why you COPIED all the information above to your computer, right???

STEP THREE:

The player will now be re-formatted, and will no longer have the Coby Manager PROGRAM on the PLAYER. You can download a new copy from here:

CobyMedia Manager fix for MP822 (Windows XP/2000/Vista)

(But, you DID save it in the first steps, didn't you??) You will need it if you change computers, or computer drives...

6. Start re-synchronizing your music, movies, photos to your player. You can use the folders you originally used under the "Music" Tab, "Movies" Tab and "Photo" TABs.

OR

You can use the folders from the folder you created in STEP ONE.

ENJOY!

How many directory deep is the file going that you are trying to save? I believe the maximum NTFS file (location + name) of file length can not exceed 256 characters total.

Example: C:\user\documents\file.exe is OK

But: C:\user\documents\folder\folder\folder\folder\folder\this folder name 230 charicters long\file.exe BAD
